Well, he would, wouldn't he?

The words spoken in court by Mandy Rice-Davies who died yesterday of cancer aged 70. The phrase entered the English language.
Mandy Rice-Davies was involved along with Christine Keeler in the Profumo affair that nearly brought down the MacMillan government in the 60s.
It was a fascinating era.

Re: Well, he would, wouldn't he?

They were both " gorgeous girls" of the age.... and quite " fanciable "... so I don`t blame  Profumo for his "dalliance".... pity he couldn`t be "man enough" to accept it,...... and denied it until the "truth" prevailed, when he had to resign...

In court recorders shorthand often referred as MRDC ("Mandy Rice-Davies clause".).

I find it odd that she spent much of her life denying that she was a prostitute despite the man they were both living with being charged with living off immoral earnings.

Go back in time.... put yourself in her position..... and then ask yourself.... would you deny you were a prostitute?
It was not the "most wanted" nor the "most acceptable/admired" profession a girl would admit to....
At the time, she probably did not think of herself as a prostitute, but more of a "free living soul", out to have as good a time as she could.... which was the "lifestyle" of the times. so, having that in mind... she would deny she was a "prostitute" of the "old typecasting".....

I get that.
Its just it was always a pointless denial.
Her "occupation" was a large part of the problem at the time.

She maintains she only slept with 10 men in her life - hardly a prostitute Wink

Ah!! The swinging sixties, and they were credited with starting to break up the class structure in England. Thinking back that is possibly right.
