Welcoming 2012 Around the World

Revellers around the world are welcoming in the New Year. Each hour the BBC is starting its bulletins with the latest country to welcome in 2012.
Around the World 2012
In London there will be an 11 minute display around the London Eye.

Re: Welcoming 2012 Around the World

And how disgusting to spend so much money (Syndey 4 Billion ) on fireworks that lasted for 12minutes, when people around the world are dying of diseases, through lack of funding for research or distribution of medicines to counteract them.....
. Each country will try to "outdo" the previous "new year", and also previous years efforts resulting in a colossal waste of money, that could do so much good if it were channelled in the right direction.

Re: Welcoming 2012 Around the World

A lot of people will get a lift from the feel-good factor around the New Year.  It's been a difficult year and people deserve a break Cool
I know the point you're making but if the money was not spent on fireworks I don't think it would have been put to any other use along the lines you suggest.

Re: Welcoming 2012 Around the World

With Swmbo went for a walk at 11:30 this evening, starry starry night, Orion high in the sky, not a car, nor a firework or any electric lights in sight in any direction, just the moon couple of shooting stars and scurrying scattered cloud, with warm wind and a couple of foxes howling, very eerie……..as if the time had stopped............ got back at 00:25...................somehow missed all the excitement.

(Syndey 4 Billion )
would be sufficient to solve the "World Polio problem" once and for all, just squandered in 12 minutes. Crazy

An amazing show in London with a quarter of a million people at the London Eye to watch. Boris promised London would put on a great show and he didn't let us down. Cool Cool

Hang on a minute, the Sidney fireworks will not have cost  4 Billion (AUD?) surely.

This seems more realistic. From the Telegraph.com

Today's celebrations come after police made 57 arrests and crowds were well-behaved, Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said today as she defended the cost of the $6.3m fireworks display.

The London display cost £1.8M.  The Police made 77 arrests during the evening.

Re: Welcoming 2012 Around the World

Leaving aside the cost issues...I thought the BBC coverage of the London display was much better than previous years poor attempts, using wider angles from further back getting the whole area rather than zoomed in to the middle of the display.
Experience; is something you gain, just after you needed it most.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you. But because in that brief moment while the coin is in the air. You suddenly know what you are hoping for.

Re: Welcoming 2012 Around the World

Where does that  £1.8M come from I wonder? Are my tax pounds contributing to the fireworks or does it come from the local council budget.
Perhaps the council should charge £10.00 each to the visitors to fund the display and the policing required.
