Welcome to George Orwell's 1984 state.

Hi All
Police 'arrest innocent youths for their DNA', officer claims
Quote
Hundreds of teenagers are having their DNA taken by police in case they commit crimes later in life, an officer has disclosed.
Officers are targeting children as young as 10 with the aim of placing their DNA profiles on the national database to improve their chances of solving crimes, it is claimed.
The alleged practice is also described as part of a "long-term crime prevention strategy" to dissuade youths from committing offences in the future.

If this is not George Orwell's 1984 state I don't know what is?

I'd be happy for them to have my DNA - it means I can be eliminated from suspicion immediately.
It also means that if there is something they want to ask me about, something I may have witnessed etc, they can do so without wasting time and money in many instances.

Except the DNA details will be deleted when the children reach 18.
Quote
Children not convicted of any other offence will have profiles erased after six years or when they reach 18, whichever is sooner.

Thus negating the idea of dissuading them from committing a crime after that age  Cheesy
DNA should only be kept once charged and convicted ortherwise it should be deleted.

I am concerned that DNA can be used as the main basis of an investigation as I suffer from psoriasis so spread my DNA liberally where ever I go which can easily be picked up by others on their clothing.

Re: Welcome to George Orwell's 1984 state.

Personally I don't have any issues with it.
Just about everything else about me and my life is on some database somewhere already so where's the problem.
I could say 'what have you got to hide' but the point is everyone over the age of 16 has something to hide including myself.

It's a myth that the innocent have nothing to fear.

Except DNA evidence override alibi's, you then have to prove the DNA evidence is incorrect of the reason that it's there.

hmmm interesting but if your DNA is at the crime scene then you were obviously there, altho if your at work or such surely dna evidence isnt overridden =]

Re: Welcome to George Orwell's 1984 state.

Your DNA could be at a crime scene that you had visited innocently before the crime even happened.

Re: Welcome to George Orwell's 1984 state.

As I said earlier I suffer from psoriasis so I can leave a lot of DNA on say a coach seat and a few hours/days later someone else could sit in the same seat pick up my DNA then go home spread my DNA in the house and then get murdered. If there was a DNA database I would be in the frame and then have to prove how my DNA ended up in a strangers house. How would I do that as I need to know my movements and the strangers movements for several days/weeks.
