Impressive isn't it?  I assume any train carrying these flasks would certainly not be going at those speeds.

No - max is about 55mph IIRC, but what if a high speed train hits one.
That test train was doing just under 100mph

I seem to remember that when they were moving hazardous materials by rail other trains were kept away, but accidents can happen.

I think it would have been kept secret if the flask had obviously broken open.
It probably cracked it a bit though - I wonder if it was a full one on its way to Windscale.

Judging by the number of people they had invited to watch, I think they were confident that it would be fine.

I most certainly don't have any inside knowledge.
But it is alleged that it was just full of clean water at high pressure and that it barely leaked.

Well - if it's got nuclear waste in it, I'd prefer it to not leak at all!

I spent some time doing Rough Off Road testing at a place that used to be called MVEE Bagshot, think it has now been privitised.
Anyway, we had a nuclear transport lorry turn up for testing, via the Orford Ness Research base, - now a nature reserve.  all was ok untill it had an accident, turned out it had a live load
I had no connection to the Army or Official Secrets, we just rented use of the tracks
