Vulcan XM603 recently restored at Woodford Aerodrome.

Local Granada TV News item on Vulcan XM603 recently restored.

136 Vulcans were made at Woodford.

My Dad worked on them.....  he used to take me in weekends, and I would play in a Vulcan.

Very cramped, very smelly, but amazing !

Very privileged.

Re: Vulcan XM603 recently restored at Woodford Aerodrome.

Hang about... with the 3 companies that were supporting XH558 to remain airworthy pulling out, how has this one been restored if there are no experienced engineers, parts, designs or engineering support? - You can't just stick any old turbine blade into a turbine, nor can you replace any part with some old lump of metal from a scrap yard. If it's been "restored" in the proper sense then they must have used legitimate parts - and had access to the expertise to do it.

So whats gone wrong here then? Why won't this one fly?

An amazing bit of kit to be sure, but what a pity they remind so many of those darker times when countries really were on the brink of nuclear war and these were our front line deterrent. With no defence except speed and height, how many would have 'made it to target' I wonder.

Re: Vulcan XM603 recently restored at Woodford Aerodrome.

You have to remember that back then we were actually at the forefront of technological invention and so they stoof a very good chance of making it and more so at night as they're so quiet from a distance. Trouble is we're heading for another cold war now. Europe is crumbling and suddenly Putin is the most powerful man in the region again - even if his prized aircraft carrier has to have an emergency tow boat next to it due to its fragile engines.

The Satan 2 nuclear missile is due to enter service too - he's very proud of it as it can destroy an area the size of france. While I can understand him wanting to replace his ageing nukes, does he really need such powerful ones?

Can't remember who posted XM558 (pesky forum - only shows the post you're replying to) but it's XH558 according to the vulcan emails I get..

Well in 1960 Gary Powers was shot out of the sky flying at something like 70,000 feet, which was not long after these aircraft entered service so......

Yes in a U2 spy plane with a very long and slow wingspan if memory serves.

The vulcan was a bit different to that.

Re: Vulcan XM603 recently restored at Woodford Aerodrome.

Well of course that's obvious Thumbs Up

All I was suggesting was that if that Russian missile could take out a U2 at that height it would have had little trouble taking down a Vulcan. Do you know what the comparable speeds were?

I have gut feeling that the chances of one making it to Moscow would have been pretty slim - unless the better informed and experienced here know better.

"During the 1950s, the RAF developed its legendary V-bombers - the Valiant, Victor, and Vulcan - in their iconic Cold War white, anti-flash colour scheme. But it soon became clear that they would increasingly struggle to get through Soviet air defences"

Re: Vulcan XM603 recently restored at Woodford Aerodrome.

After the U2 was shot down ,, The Vulcan and all the V force changed from high level bombing to a low level under radar approach , Hence why the paint was changed from anti Flash White to the standard cammo Wink

A role I suspect they not designed or suited for.

Re: Vulcan XM603 recently restored at Woodford Aerodrome.

The Valiant was Sad  scrapped first this being one of the reasons The Victor then was modified to Air Refueling .

The Vulcan WinkWink was actually rather well at it Cool

Re: Vulcan XM603 recently restored at Woodford Aerodrome.

Restored is a bit strong, it has had a jolly good tidy up and work to prevent further deterioration. I wouldn't say it's the best example of a 300 engine series Vulcan - thats XM655 IMHO.

Don't you believe it!

Them vulcans can't half shift even at low levels. I saw XH558 circling around in front of me a year or two back while waiting for it. Thought I'd heard an airliner overhead... then another... then another... looked up to see it was the flaming vulcan had been circling round right in front of me about 1 - 2 miles from me - I was seriously miffed. Even with the thrust at full it's a quiet old bird and it was at pretty low level when they used full thrust to gain height.

I was surprised at just how manouverable it was at low levels and low speeds. Maybe not much by todays fighter standards but for a 1950s bomber design it's very agile.
