Video buffering or slow downloads? Blame the speed of light

Here is an interesting article:
http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2013/03/youtube-buffering-or-slow-downloads-blame-the-...
However can this sentence be explained to me?
"If the game you're installing from Steam is about 3.6GB and your bandwidth is about 8Mb/s, it will take about an hour to download."
I don't understand the maths. 3.6Gb = 3600Mb.
3600Mb divided by 8 would be 450 seconds or 7 and a half minutes. How do they make an hour?

If I say bytes and bits would you see your error?

To get your math correct, the download connection would have to be fibre, @70+Mb/s (Mb/s vs MB/s)

Storage is usually quoted in bytes (B) and data transmission in bits(b)!

Although what you quoted is correct.

But the game is 3.6GB not 3.6Gb

Re: Video buffering or slow downloads? Blame the speed of light

Oh, I think so.  So the correct calculation is:

3600Mb multiplied by 8 then divided by 8 would be 3600 seconds then divided by 60 = 1 hour
Correct?

Smiley
yes but be more careful when using b and B they do denote bits and bytes
