Vehicle Number plates

Although the web is great sometimes you can go around in circles trying to find a definitive answer......
I'm trying to find out if the number plates you see with the circle of stars and EU symbol and then individual country
1)  Britain - Union Flag and letters GB
2) England - St George cross and letters ENG
3) Scotland - Saltare - and letters SCO
I know number 1 is fine - the DVLC site shows it, but although one sees 2 & 3 - I been told that  they may be frowned upon by some authorities.
Does anyone have the definitive reference please

Re: Vehicle Number plates

Regrettably it's not for me - but a friend. I'd told him he couldn't be 100% legal with one of the Scottish plates, but he though correctly as it happened. I hadn't any reason to keep up to date on the change in legislation - and don't read motoring magazines - and rarely the motoring pages of the papers.
So I was fairly certain a few people here would know - many thanks again.
