Uranium Glass

I was watching Auction Hunters today on TV (not to be confused with Storage Hunters) and Allen and Ton breifly mentioned something about uranium glass while the special fx people have put up a little sign on the screen 0saying uranium glass can often be radioactive.

I'd never heard of the stuff until today... so i can't help but wonder why people would make drinking glasses out of something radioactive? - anyone know?

Seems somewhat bonkers to me.

I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

Re: Uranium Glass

The normal colour of uranium glass ranges from yellow to green depending on the oxidation state and concentration of the metal ions, although this may be altered by the addition of other elements as glass colorants. Uranium glass alsofluoresces bright green under ultraviolet light and can register above background radiation on a sufficiently sensitiveGeiger counter, although most pieces of uranium glass are considered to be harmless and only negligibly radioactive.

Re: Uranium Glass

It's like Thorium mantles on kerosene & gas lamps, radioactive, but negligibly so, that and Tritium tubes in things like Trimphone telephone dials, puts out Beta radiation, but, it's harmless even if broken...

And I have both... Funny

'But it's harmless........'

That is until we discover it's not.

Bet you can think of a number of things that were harmless, except they were not.

Asbestos.

Luminous paint.

etc

Funnily enough, no, cos I'm not the sort to eat radioactive materials... Crazy

Well, except bananas (potassium), and the occasional brazil nut (radium)... Grin

Re: Uranium Glass

My two cousins worked in the docks in their later life.

Yes you could put down their early demise to heavy drinking and smoking.

But the asbestos "snowball" fights probably never helped.Sad

Re: Uranium Glass

@7up

various radioactive glasses were made for the club scene where they either fluoresced or was caused ot when a particular spectrum of non visible light was played around the place, made for especially funky atmosphere around the place with little risk to the club goers or staff, and also unlike the led versions they don't run out of power and are dishwasher safe, which makes using them a lot simpler and cheaper,

not something I would want myself but then I care a lot less about "looks" or "image"
