Ukraine - this could be really bad news

I couldn't find a specific thread so I created one on the current conflict.
There seems to have been an escalation today with apparent armoured Russian vehicles with an 'aid' envoy entering Ukraine. Two British newspapers with journalists on the ground, the Guardian and Telegraph, have witnessed the convoy and the armoured vehicles. Russia has denied any military vehicles entered Ukraine.

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/aug/14/russian-military-vehicles-enter-ukraine-aid-convoy-stop...
I am significantly more likely to believe the UK/western media over that in Russia.
So what is Putin up to? Will the situation escalate? Domestically, he has lost significant public approval for Russia's actions in the region.

Ukrainian president claims part of the military convoy has been destroyed: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/aug/15/ukraine-claims-destroyed-russian-military-vehicles-cros...
Rebel commander claims Russian arms are on their way to Ukraine: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-28817347
Personally I don't trust any country that pulls stunts such as a mediaeval-style posthumous trial (2013): http://uk.reuters.com/article/2013/07/11/us-russia-magnitsky-idUSBRE96A09V20130711

Re: Ukrainian Conflict

I Doubt Putin cares what anyone thinks.
No one in the West is going to take military action against him and he knows it, his intention is to get Russia back to the power it once was, unrealistic it may be but with the weak leaders we have in the West this is his best chance

Ukraine - this could be really bad news

If it isn't an invasion, it's looks like something very close it, as reports come in from here, seemingly confirmed by a Ukrainian official, that a Russian convoy of 150 vehicles, including 40 MBTs, has broken through into the greater Luhansk city area.
What seems to stack this up is a report in the Mail, which has picked up tank transporters carrying what it says are T-90s heading towards the Ukrainian border, and returning empty

Re: Ukraine - this could be really bad news

I created a thread last week (I think) about this as it's going to escalate.
For an independent and on the ground view of what's actually going on, I read the OSCE reports (which are very detailed and good) - http://www.osce.org/press-releases?whoweare=All&activities=All&fields=896&institutions=All&view_name...

We're almost back to the war in 2008.

I'm back in the Czech Rep in a few weeks time probably until XMAS. We get 3/4 of our gas from Russia through Ukraine, so any conflict could have major consequences. Last winter was mild, but it's not uncommon to see -20 or so during cold spells.

Re: Ukraine - this could be really bad news

@nozzer are you referring to the 5 day conflict in south Ossetia?
I can see the Russians embarking on boarder expansion to secure there cash generators (pipelines) but I'm not sure they would actually want to expand into EU nations who are paying for all that Russian gas otherwise they wont have any cash to go round .....

Yes. Not the same place I know but similar tactics.
Russia depends on gas to bolster their economy. The last thing they or Putin wants is to have an economic downturn caused by lost gas sales.

Yes I noticed something on one of the news sites last night about tank transporters going home without their cargo of tanks.
Worrying times.

Absolutely no offence to anyone who might take this the wrong way (  Crazy ), but do you think that Putin is suffering from "little man syndrome"?

Re: Ukraine - this could be really bad news

indeed the separatists in south Ossetia also threatened to disconnect the gas pipeline which triggered a mini war that they lost rather abruptly, iirc there were unconfirmed reports of them dragging the in place officials out of there respective offices and treating them to a fatal iron overdose in the town square until surrender was declared ......

he would appear to have a growing napoleon complex and seems to be consistently attempting to entrench his empire in turmoil with the implied directive of boarder expansion without and formal declaration to that effect, and he's started telling people what they can and cant think like tha bad old days of Stalin .....

I do indeed - I think he's power tripping.
Unfortunately he's backed by many old soviet army folks who preferred the old days and they're all in power with him. Not healthy or supportive to human survival that is it.
