Ukraine, could this happen.

Clearly Putin is seen as a good leader by a number of Russians who view the west as a threat, if he decided to take over Ukraine by whatever means is it possible that he might go further and decide to take back a number of other countries that were once under Russian domination ?
Might sound unlikely but who would stop him ? EU leaders have been shown to be very weak and even Merkyl is keeping her head down over this crisis and she is possibly the strongest leader in the EU.
Most unlikely America would want to get involved in a military sense for problems in Europe, they have involved themselves in past Wars in Europe at considerable cost and would be unlikely to do so again.
Of course NATO exists but would all those involved in funding of NATO be in full agreement to take military action against a country the size of Russia.
Clearly Putin would like to see the old Russia back again, could this be his chance ?

Re: Ukraine, could this happen.

Domestically, he does not have the support of the Russians over their involvement in Ukraine.

Re: Ukraine, could this happen.

Our biggest mistake was bank rolling russia with financial aid for so many years. We all know the ruskys have been pouring that money into military hardware and we've all (by that i mean anyone with common sense) known that the ruskys would one day want to use that refreshed military might.
Moons ago we had a financial form of guarantee that the russian threat was collapsing. Instead, we paved the road to hell with good intentions and now it's coming round full circle.

Re: Ukraine, could this happen.

The actual figures for UK foreign aid to Russia were tiny (£373,000 in 2007/Cool.

We have seen examples of how he deals with those who do not support him.
He probably has the ability to win over more Russians to his point of view through distortion of the facts, some have even suggested the intention was to blow up a Russian plane so this would have given him the excuse to send troops and tanks into Ukraine.
Putin controls the Military and finances of Russia and has a strong propoganda machine.
It's worth remembering what happened to those who opposed or failed to support Stalin.

Re: Ukraine, could this happen.

Russia needs to recreate the cold war if it to survive as a nation for the next few decades, Putin and his cronies need a reason to steal the business of legitimate companies both to line their own pockets and to fill the state coffers, they need Ukraine as farmland as most of Russia is ill suited for food production otherwise they will all starve before they have managed to prop up the country on uncontrolled printing of money to pay for all the "projects", something Stalin started all those decades ago because the rubble was an isolated currency making it worth a lot as it wasn't that easy to get hold of....

Re: Ukraine, could this happen.

I was reading the news on one of the Russian news websites this morning, there was an article explaining why Kazakhstan was starting to break relations with Moscow and move closer politically to China. It was partly because of the situation in Ukraine and partly because of some dumb statements by Putin at an educational conference challenging the origins of Kazakhstan as a country.  Isn't Google Translate useful!
It looks like Putin's intentions stretch further than just Ukraine. The West let him get away with "annexing" part of Georgia and also the Crimea.
Now Zen, but a +Net residue.
