UK Government - all your data is safe with us - ID Cards - no problem

Oh yeah  Angry http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7662604.stm
Quote
An investigation is under way into the disappearance of a computer hard drive containing the personal details of about 100,000 <members> of the Armed Forces
The information was being held by EDS, which is the Ministry of Defence's main IT contractor.
<snip>
It is thought to contain more than 1.5m pieces of information, including the details of 600,000 potential recruits.
<snip>
There is also said to be a small amount of information about bank details. It contains details of passport numbers, addresses, dates of birth, driving licence details and telephone numbers.
<snip>
It is understood the drive was not encrypted.

A removable hard drive with sensitive information and it wasn't encrypted  Crazy
Why on earth was EDS given that information

Re: UK Government - all your data is safe with us - ID Cards - no problem

Does anyone else around here smell a rat? The police take everyones finger prints and DNA upon every arrest and never wipe those details as they're now allowed to keep them for eternity. Now suddenly personal details of people are vanishing from every government department that has a name. Details which can be used to re-create someones ID.
Lets put this into perspective. The government have DNA of millions of people and now details of peoples IDs are going missing and the government isn't panicking as much as you would think. Am I the only one who thinks there is more to this than we're being told? Things like hard drives and CDs don't 'just vanish'. Especially so frequently.

Its certainly looking that way. My concern is what the DNA could be used for.

Maybe we should decline to fill forms in en masse on the basis that we don't trust the government to keep our data safe.
If any company did what the government has done they'd be bankrupt from the fines by now.

Exactly. Where do these mysterious companies come from? They only ever seem to be heard of once the press reveal them to us. Did we ask for our data to be handled externally by contractors? No. Does that infringe our rights under the DPA? Yes.
Still, all the time these things are with an 'external' company there is the ability for the government to shift blame. Convenient wouldn't you say? - Especially if the data is being unofficially intercepted..

I haven't denied that. All I'm saying is this government are in bed with a lot of people. It certainly seems conveinient how so much data keeps vanishing.

Data protection? It's all just an act.
No, the real problem we have here is that there is confusion about what a government contractor is, who the government represent and what encryption is. I think the best solution is for the government to hire the best encrypters in the country and give them the data to copy onto internet forums. With so many dyslexics looking for something useful to fill their days, this would kill too brids with won stown.
