Re: Trains to run on AA rechargable batteries

80.000 batteries and a range of just 43 miles... you have to wonder why they bother!
At least it does specify on the side that batteries are included  Cheesy

Re: Trains to run on AA rechargable batteries

Shortage of suitable diesel powered rolling stock to cascade around the network plus the new emissions regulations forced on any new build diesel rolling stock make exploring battery powered trains the cheaper stop gap option.
Network rail wants to electrify as much as the network as possible, ordering new expensive diesel powered trains with a working life of around 40 years doesn't make long term economic sense  Wink
There is a lot of rolling stock coming to the end of its working life in the next 5 years either due to corrosion issues OR needing to be modified to be made suitable for disabled use.

Re: Trains to run on AA rechargable batteries

I'm picturing the train running out of power before it's destination and an announcement over the tannoy asking for passengers to donate their batteries Grin

Maybe in an emergency combs on wires would drop from the ceiling.
Would passengers vigorously brush their hair please.
Children please use the balloons provided to rub on sleeping passengers heads.

Re: Trains to run on AA rechargable batteries

So, instead of paying for tickets, do we just bring along a handful of batteries to stick under the flap on the bottom of the train?  Grin

For anyone wondering about safety, have a look at what happens to a small lithium battery when it is heated - then multiply it 80,000 times.

Some dell owners are already familiar with lithium battery fires, but here's an induced failure of a battery anyway... Grin
