Re: Tower Block Demolished-(BBC picture)

couldnt understand the thinking on that, its not that old a tower block, and they knock it down  to make way for a few new low-rise affordable housing.

Re: Tower Block Demolished-(BBC picture)

Was a big "blot" on the landscape !... and maybe it was built using re-inforced concrete (as many were in the 1960`s) and now suffering from concrete cancer....

I'm always amazed how they control the area so well.  One of the famous demolition experts was 'Blaster' Bates.

@ shutter I think you may be right about concrete cancer.

I wonder, did the pigeons make a fast escape from the falling concrete? It looked as though they were
just returning home and some  barsteward blew their house up. Crazy

I live in Motherwell, and the reasons the tower block, which was just over 50 old and had around 350 flats in it, was demolished was because a) lack of privacy for residents which made it b) difficult to let so the council used it as c) emergency accomodation for the homeless, drug addicts and anti social tenants, thus aggravating a) and b).
It was an eyesore, and rapidly becoming a no go area, and the best solution was to demolish it.

So where do the homeless, drug addicts and anti social tenants of Motherwell go now I wonder.
Experience; is something you gain, just after you needed it most.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you. But because in that brief moment while the coin is in the air. You suddenly know what you are hoping for.

Re: Tower Block Demolished-(BBC picture)

I've just found out that a friend of my son, who's a keen photographer was in a nearby tower block when Glencairn Tower came down, and took a series of sixty photos as it fell, using a Canon EOS50D
They're quite impressive, and if any photo buffs here would like to have a copy, please PM me.
I've attached an example
