Re: Torches & Gloves

This is the folly of our increased reliance on complicated, distributed and unreliable renewable will show up. When renewables form less than 25% of your supply you can cover for their unreliability, but a cold, windless and cloudy day leaves us open to power outages...  and we haven't got rid of gas boilers and adopted electric vehicles yet..

This is a good site,  shows demand and input from various sources in real time..

Re: Torches & Gloves

Does demand still increase during the commercial break in Coronation Street or are there too many channels nowadays for it to matter?

Re: Torches & Gloves

Guess it may increase during world cup football or rugby breaks,  and in a morning and evening when people have a shower cook dinner etc.  That is where the 'pumped storage' quick reaction system comes into play, can go from zero to many megawatts in less than a minute.    electric mountain in Llanberris Snowdon is worth a visit if you are in the area ( but will not be open to public for a while though )

Re: Torches & Gloves

Oh hell, I'd best go buy a generator now. Might be the start of the latest must have.

Ever helpful. Grin Sure, I’d love to help you out. Now which way did you come in?

Poorly workers !!

You obviously didn't read the article !!

Fears are growing that high levels of staff sickness during the coronavirus outbreak, mixed with the government's self-isolation rules, could lead to a shortage of engineers.

Re: Torches & Gloves

If the daily fail published facts rather than conjecture and stories, I might read it, buuuuuuuuuuuut, they don't...

The grid operators will have plenty of backups in place, scaremongering people into believing there will be rolling powercuts because there will be nobody to fix the wires or operate the power plants is just ignorant and inflammatory behaviour on that rag's part...

Not to mention those who repeat the ‘project fear’ nonsense here and on other forums and assorted Facebook groups.

A link retweeted by Northern Powergrid (they operate the wires where I live) regarding Covid19 and the UK's energy networks:

Kind of makes the DM's story look like a load of digestive waste... 😂

That's right cos there's so many nuclear physicists around to operate nuclear power stations these days - you'd know how to shut down a nuclear reactor in an emergency wouldn't you?! - and every other bloke can get up there and work on power lines at height carrying 132KV. Almost everyone has a working at height certificate these days don't they!

Seriously, engineers are just as susceptible to this virus as anyone else. If they go sick or die, you better hope that the nukes have a reliable fail safe so we don't have our own Chernobyl.

This is a very real threat 2CV, it isn't just people stirring up trouble. Yes the DM has form for that when it comes to Celebs and royals but not serious stuff like this.

I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

Re: Torches & Gloves

Oh for goodness sake, grow up...

Unlike the panic-buying prats who think the sky is falling at the mere mention of something bad happening, these guys have professionally-arranged contingency plans, they aren't some two-bit operation on an industrial estate in a portacabin, they are the people who run the damned energy networks, if they were completely susceptible to the brown stuff hitting the fan, then the UK would have collapsed a long time ago...

They have backups on backups on backups, failsafes across the board, people ready to go to replace those who may fall ill, if you think we're heading for rolling powercuts, then you're deluded...

Re: Torches & Gloves

@7up don't worry, the electrical supply industry has limitless resources just like railways and NHS,  they have purchased thousands of those Honda 3KW generators just in case and are asking retired former employees to come back and help out.  Just like a battle plan that is useless after the first contact with the enemy ( when their awkward generals do not behave as planned ) most emergency plans I have seen that are put together by office staff who never worked on anything ( just to tick a box in the corporate  'emergency planning ' register) are useless when something does actually happen... rest assured there is a little Honda generator with your name on it ( and a can of pop LOL 7up, snow whites favourite drink ) - hang on a minute where will the fuel come from - Oh well,  no plan is perfect.
