Toilet cistern.

Flushing syphon in the toilet reached the point where it had almost given up, so after checking what was available these days decided on a simple flapper system, this consists of a button, short lever, chain and a rubber plug on a hinge that just lifts and then drops down when the cistern is empty, the rubber flapper may need replacing at some stage but that's a 2 minute job and they cost around £6.

Compare that to the old syphon system where the water pipe  had to be disconnected and the cistern removed from the wall and requiring a new sealing washer etc, which has to be done in the first place to get the old one out.

All the new systems, of which their are several can now be replaced without the need to remove the cistern, how come it has taken so long for someone to come up with this simple idea ?

Re: Toilet cistern.

I replaced mine a couple of years ago. I finally gave up on the rapid pumping that was needed to get it to flush. As you say you have to remove the whole flushing unit just to replace the flappy washer thingamajig. So I decided I just as well replace the unit with an easy to maintain one. In B&Q they were about a fiver dearer than the bog standard ones. But on ebay they were cheap, delivered at less than half B&Q's price.

It was adjustable height for an overflow that flowed back into the toilet and the top section is easily removed to change the flappy washer if necessary.

It's been about for decades, in the US of A of course, their bogs are pretty much all flapper flush cisterns, or ball-valve (which basically is a ball sat over the hole with a chain hooked up to it), but over here we stuck with the syphon system because that's what we stuck with, and you know how stubborn us brits are... Grin

Of course, in an emergency, it's always handy to have a bucket on hand, not to go in of course, but to fill up with water and pour down the bowl... Grin
