This old house is tumbling down.

So a consultancy report to the MPs reckon they need to spend at least £4 Billion to restore their Parliament offices?  I say ship them out to the Olympic site and re-purpose some the arenas as meeting places. The the historic buildings can be restored without complex scheduling, maybe saving some cash for our Armed Forces.
Now Zen, but a +Net residue.

Re: This old house is tumbling down.

The Scottish Parliament building was £414 Million for 8% of the UK Electorate so £4 Billion is about right for the main Parliament.

IAgree but there are buildings that could be made suitable for them outside London, somewhere more central in the country would be ideal.
It would also be cheaper to purchase a block of flats for those MP's who need accommodation rather than pay 'housing expenses'

Isn't that a bit unfair to Her Majesty, making her travel much further to read her speech at the opening of Parliament at her age Huh

Re: This old house is tumbling down.

If it's going to cost that much, whoever/whatever is supposed to be in charge of maintaining the buildings needs sacking. They must literally be falling down - unless of course this is typical public sector costing with everything being done as expensively and wastefully as possible.

Can't she just jump out of a helicopter and parachute into the opening ceremony?

This is an iconic building known throughout the world as the centre of democracy. It has to be retained.

Re: This old house is tumbling down.

In these days of the internet and video conferencing, and bearing in mind they already claim generous allowances for administrative offices in their constituency  and/or home, what's wrong with video conferencing?
Then the repairs/restorations could be done more efficiently, without working round the MPs, their secretaries, researchers, PA's, apprentice to the tea stirrers mate, et al... Smiley

They moved Parliament to live amongst the ancient greek relics? That's where democracy was born, shame the people of that country forgot all about it though... Grin

More like centre of draconianism... if there is such a word.  Crazy
Full of oppressive hypocrites who like to enjoy the high life at the cost of other people.
It may be 'known' throughout the word for being the centre of democracy but that doesn't mean that it is - it's a clever illusion.
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!
