Things I Hate About Christmas

I suppose that should be things I hate about today's Christmas.

Maybe I've grown a bit bah humbug but all the fake happiness and jollity in this ever increasing "Christmas" period is just too much.

And what are those soulless aluminium triangles being clipped to lampposts supposed to be. As Christmas lights go they are not a patch on the lights which used to be strung across streets here with large stars and other decorations hanging in the middle. Many city and town centre displays used to put a fun fair lights to shame. Even Christmas trees are not the same. A local one that goes up in the middle of a roundabout half disappears behind placards announcing sponsored by this company and that shop etc.

Many of the shop staff look miserable. But I guess the happy back in the day staff were like that because they had the same Christmas holidays to look forward to as their customers.

But that said I still enjoy the actual Christmas. It's the time I can force myself upon relatives and do my best to eat and drink them out of house and home.

Re: Things I Hate About Christmas

I hate the price of Christmas trees.

Every year I grumble, every year my Mrs says "but it's Christmas", and every year I say....

But really, £30 for a tree? Somebody is having a laugh, and it's not me!

It's all so commercial and competitive these days but with 8 grandkids, I make it worthwhile.

@jab1

Christmas is.... when you run out of wrapping paper and instead it says 'Happy Birthday'?

Re: Things I Hate About Christmas

Have festivals ever not been commercial and competitive?Undecided It wasn't a festival, as such, more a chore, that the Jews had, according to the Gospel narrative, to return home for a census. I can imagine the glint in eyes for extra shekels to be made from the incomers.

I am not hating Christmas for that; the commercialism and competition is not its fault. I suggest it lies within humanity. Maybe we hate ( despise) ourselves, when all is placed side by side with the message of the season, despite often not believing it at all.

Of course there is nothing wrong in celebrating: some do it in serious adversity.

Lastly a censored section of a letter received by my church:

We will be travelling to my home area ***** to be with my Mum during this Christmas. It will not be an easy Christmas for many Zimbabweans this year because of economic hardship.   Food is available in shops but the prices have gone up so much beyond the reach of many people. Unlike 2008 where food was not available in shops this time around it is the opposite. You spend days and weeks looking for fuel.    Even if it is available the queues are so long to get it.

The feeding programme is going on at ***** School in *****. This is very beneficial to the children since most of the families can no long afford to have three meals a day. Children come to school without having breakfast in the morning.

It ends

We wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year.

Iit is positive and outward looking. Put that against our grumbles, some to be noted in this community.

No one has to agree with my opinion, but in the time I have left a miracle would be nice.

I won't have that problem - I don't 'do' Christmas at all.

@jab1

Well no, and given what it has become few of us really do, but how ironic that wrapping paper really should say 'happy birthday'.

It's a funny old world and no mistake. 😐

Re: Things I Hate About Christmas

@Champnet Not exactly - in my case anyway. I usually just carry on as normal, but do double shifts (and more, if needed) at the two local animal rescue shelters I volunteer at.

This year, though, for personal reasons, I am at friends a long way from home. Back to normal next year.

Christmas comes not even once a year at my age, which is why I'm hoping for a bottle of single malt instead. 😉

Talking of scrooge I still prefer the Alastair Sim version.

But Patrick Stewart was pure bahhhhhhh.
