The best pub down your way

What pub is the best where you live?  and why?
Because it is like a traditional pub.
Or
Because it is a modern pub.

The Red Lion at Kilmington is a traditional pub with a good landlord (IMO the most important thing in any pub), decent beer, reasonably priced, homemade, lunchtime food but the Seymour Arms in Witham Friary is a cider pub that hasn't changed since the early 1960s and reminds me of the pub I learned to drink in.

It’s not ‘down my way’ by any means but if you’re in the North Yorkshire dales the Farmer’s Arms in Muker is worth a visit. My mother was born in the area and we still have relatives there so try and get up there at least once a year.
Muker is very isolated with inhospitable rugged terrain all round; there is something nice about sitting in this lovely pub especially when the weather’s foul. The best pint of Theakston’s Old Peculiar that I’ve come across

But I won't say what/where because the landlord is what you might call "an acquired taste" though he does know how to look after his beer.  Crazy
Fortunately he takes a back seat these days and his wife and daughter are much better at running the place; good genuinely home-cooked food too.
However, talking of the Dales I stayed here very recently, a bit south of Muker though:

Re: The best pub down your way

Lost in an archive of history, the story goes Jon something or other (an Archer, now buried in the church cemetery) was on the run from the French following the battle at Agincourt, he took refuge in a slaughter house. When the French looked around the slaughter house Jon hid by pulling a ‘cows head’ over his body. The story reached back home before he did, they renamed the local Inn ‘The Bull’s Head’ after his exploits. The pub is the centre of village life, some where for a yarn, a chat, an ale, somewhere to take visiting friends. A good traditional Pub (with a bit of history).
At one time a new ‘landlady’ bought up a few pubs and decided to rename them after characters from Lord of the Rings, the ‘Bull’s Head’ became “The Hobbit” for a brief period in its history, until a local historian pointed out the origin of the ‘Bull’s Head’ which prompted the name to be changed back.

Another local village pub (not too far away), once owned by the same landlady was renamed the ‘Prancing Pony’. Shortly afterward the launch a couple of local lads (one called Jim) one night put a ladder up against the sign and painted an ‘appendage’ on the Pony and renamed the pub sign “The Bonkin Donkey”, but that’s another story - Inter village rivalry was blamed.

The best pub my way is the Thistle Bar in Maryhill, Glasgow because it is quiet, there is no football colours and v ery nice staff also the food very good.  It is so quiet that people with learning disabilities and elderly people go there. The pub is modern as it was done up and changed its name because there was a serious fire a few years ago

http://www.gurnardshead.co.uk/ --  location, location, location.
http://www.victoriainn-penzance.co.uk/index.htm -- location, food. Contrary to the website, you wont be able to see The Mount from there.
But this is not 'down my way' any longer. Sad
