The Great Hack

Anybody?

Shown on Netflix yesterday and a great if confusing story about Cambridge Analytica, Facebook, and much of it framed around a person called Kaiser - who seemed more shifty than Pickfords.

Did they manipulate some of us to vote for Brexit and the rednecks for Trump.

Hmm. Roll eyes

Facebook is a company that will tell there is no invasion of privacy at all, because there is no privacy.

'Course there's privacy!

I can see from your face on FB when you typed that you're only joking. . .Grin

Re: The Great Hack

A fifteen minute TED talk about it here delivered by a Carole Cadwalladr.

A Guardian feature writer before she took this on board (and perhaps still is) and to be honest I did find her rather partisan.

You can also find the lady on Twitter banging on about it all - @carolecadwall

Easily sidestepped by not watching the video. Grin

I'm not buying anything that a Guardian writer past or present has to say!

If they did, of course, you wouldn't know. If you'd spotted the manipulation, it wouldn't work.

As I understand it, they used the data from an on-line questionnaire to target specific scare stories at specific demographics. Messages such as, "The EU is trying to get rid of our cuppa!", or "The EU is trying to stop our chips being called chips!", or even "70 million Turks set to move to the UK!". Each one specific to a defined group of people.

And they didn't need to fool many people. A 2% swing (within the statistical limits of error for a count) would be enough to change the outcome.

But it's OK. I'm sure we weren't part of their target audience :-)
