The Dandy may close after 75 years

Britain's oldest comic The Dandy faces closure after 75 years as sales fall to just 8,000 a week
Quote
At its height from 1950s to 1980s, comic book sold two million copies a week

But competition from computer games and the internet has seen sales plummet to fewer than 8,000 in the second half of 2011

I remember eagerly waiting to buy the Dandy and the Beano back in the '70s. Great fun reading.
Desperate Dan, Korky the cat.
The Beano was better, I think, with Dennis the Menace, the Bash Street Kids...
That reminds me of other comics of my childhood.
Anyone remember Look & Learn? I used to enjoy the Rise And Fall of the Trigan Empire
What about Topper and Whizzer? Often got free gifts with them.

It would be a shame to see it close, but unfortunately, I think times have changed now Sad

Always preferred the Beano anyway!!
Experience; is something you gain, just after you needed it most.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you. But because in that brief moment while the coin is in the air. You suddenly know what you are hoping for.

Re: The Dandy may close after 75 years

It's a shame as I fondly remember the Dandy and the Beano.
One thing that sticks in my mind is a front page of 1961 and the comic headline being turn the page upside down it's the same. But I can't remember which of those two comics it was.

Beano was always my favourite, that was until Dan Dare and the Mekon came along. Smiley

The Eagle was a class act but the Dandy & Beano were not far behind.
Some of the things they printed years ago would not be allowed now as it would be classed as discrimination.
Also remember books about Biggles which I found great but some of the original passages would no longer be allowed.

Re: The Dandy may close after 75 years

Remember The Dandy and The Beano well, always looked forward to the Annuals at Xmas. But my favourite was another D.C. Thomson publication, Commando, launched in 1961.

Re: The Dandy may close after 75 years

DC Thomson confirms that December issue will be last ever print edition. I wonder if they will increase the slaes above the 8000 mark for the final edition.
Quote
"On December 4th, we'll publish our 75th anniversary edition and now that the cat's out of the bag I can confirm that this will be our last print edition," said Watson. "It's what comes online then that will set the tone for the next 75 years. Dan has certainly not eaten his last cow pie. All of The Dandy's characters are just 110 days away from a new lease of life."

I wish I could see and age profile of the 8000.
