The Budget

I thought I'd start a thread about this afternoon's Budget.
A non-event.
Right that's said it all.

Re: The Budget

I'm reducing petrol duty by £2bn, I will tax oil companies and extra £2bn.
This is a budget for growth, growth in the following year will be lower than previously expected.
Keeping the 50% tax rate would be a disaster for the country, I'm keeping the 50% tax rate.
WTF.

But the media would disagree.

Re: The Budget

Didn`t see the budget..... haven`t seen/heard the news.... except about 1p off the price of petrol and diesel..... WOW !... did anyone notice the queues of motorists rushing  waiting to fill up AFTER 6pm last night..... instead of the usual budget day queue BEFORE 6pm. ? ?
Now let me see, where can I go today with the cheap diesel in my car?  ?  ?  Undecided

Re: The Budget

Often wonderd why the 'deputy speaker' chairs the budget speach and not 'The Speaker' himself.
Must be some tradition..............

I think it must be tradition as it's happened as long as I can remember.

Re: The Budget

The Speaker, in his wisdom, finds better things to do than sit through the tedium of a Budget spaeech.  Grin

Re: The Budget

it was good to see the 1p reduction in fuel tax yesterday but that wasn't the full extent of it.  The Labour government had announced a further 5p increase which would have come into effect in 2 weeks time.  This has been stopped by George Osborne so effectively it's 6p a litre.

Re: The Budget

From http://www.parliament.uk/about/mps-and-lords/principal/deputy-speakers/
Quote
Although the Speaker has presided over the Budget debate, in 1968 and 1989 for example, it is usually the Chairman of Ways and Means that takes the Chair as the financial measures contained in the Chancellor’s Budget are brought in on Ways and Means Resolutions.

You sure?  I thought I read the exact opposite.
