Terrible opening sales pitch

Chap knocked on door yesterday lunchtime - we are in " no cold calling" area.
" Don't worry sir I'm not a bailiff"  - flashed his ID badge.
Looked surprised when I ended conversation and closed door.

Re: Terrible opening sales pitch

I had a 'charity worker' at the door recently.
I told him the same as I tell others...."If I gave to every charity that knocked on my door I would become a charity case".
They always seem to start with two lines...
"I'm not here to sell anything" and "All your neighbours have been very generous"

Re: Terrible opening sales pitch

I called the Police (local on the non 999 number) when one of these so called charity reps called at my door, and flashed a tatty looking piece of red car with his photo on it. Told him I was going to do so, he shrugged his shoulders and went to the house next door.
Two very sweet PCO's turned up with commendable speed, and caught up with him further round the estate and escorted him away elsewhere. The PCO's called me back later to say they had checked his credentials which they agreed on the face of it looked like an amateur computer lash-up. However it transpired he was Ok if very suspect looking.
Experience; is something you gain, just after you needed it most.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you. But because in that brief moment while the coin is in the air. You suddenly know what you are hoping for.

Re: Terrible opening sales pitch

I`ve had a couple of "cold callers".... including the religious kind..... They must thinkg I`m very rude, because I just look at them and say " Not interested"... in a very strong voice, and slam the door on them...  ( I am polite enough to hear their opening gambit, though ! !)....

Not cold callers but cold phone calls -  I detest the 'trying to make you my friend' approach.

Re: Terrible opening sales pitch

There are firms that harvest details from job applications
A unemployed customer has told me that not long after they applied for a job with a firm called the Mark Group she started having cold calls about loft & wall insulation despite her telling them that she is on the TPS and she live in a housing authority property, they have apparently phoned her a few times.
I told her to speak to a solicitor or the C.A.B & file harassment & nuscence suit.

When I get the "how are you today" approach I tend to answer "would you like the full details or the short fifteen minute version"

I had the Jehovahs round here last year.. one was a mature woman and the other was a stunning looking young woman. I politely wished them a pleasant day after informing them I wasn't religious.
I shut the door and immediately heard one of them mutter "Cor did you see that?!". I spent the next 20 seconds watching out the window trying to see which one looked the most excited Cheesy Then noticed the buggy and kid  Huh

Re: Terrible opening sales pitch

I had a cold caller at the door last week, before he went into his sales spiel I said "Sorry not interested" and he walked away, as he did I shouted "Thank you come again, or not..."  Cheesy
Don't get me wrong I know these guys are trying to do a job, but most of he people who live round me have special needs (I hate that term but SWMBO has used it for years)  and are very vulnerable.

Re: Terrible opening sales pitch

Where we live there's a local bye law prohibiting cold calling.
We've had sign on door, since 1985, that says " No hawkers, canvassers or parasites of any other form"
Most of the time it works and we see people walk past front window and return without having knocked.
