Tenants fuming as flats turned into 'Big Brother house'

Hi All
Have you seen this?
[quote="Tenants fuming as flats turned into 'Big Brother house' with 112 CCTV cameras installed inside"]
Furious tenants say security cameras have turned their flats into a huge Big Brother house.
It comes after a housing trust installed up to 112 CCTV cameras in their eight three-storey blocks and pointing towards residents' front doors. People living there say the move is an invasion of their privacy and fear they will be spied on 24 hours a day.

We have CCTV on the Estate, But all of them are outside not in the flats, Middlesbrough police said that it is illegal to have the cameras inside looking at peoples flat doors.  So the question is how can this housing trust do this?

Looks like they are being spied on 24 hours a day! Question is, do they want this?
Some would have us believe that this is what folk are asking for in order to cut crime, so maybe they have what they want?
There was a programme on Radio 4 about this very subject just over a week ago and feelings were quite mixed about this sort of surveillance.
Personally, I'd end up paranoid - couldn't stand being watched every time I come and go.

Couldn't some local "Vandals" be given spray cans and asked if they wouldn't mind painting the optics of these cameras?

If you lived in one of the Multi Story flats near here the were yobs set on fire rubbish bins on the stairwell  and three people died, you would welcome CCTV that was looking out for them,  Sod your privacy.

Those people would still have died.
But those responsible could have their photos in the newspaper as well as the victims.
Perhaps if the money spent on camers had been spent on fire alarms or fire escapes?

hopefully a CCTV camera will catch yobs before they light a fire, as in that paarticular flats construction a fire alarm would not have been much help, it had only one staircase, and hence one means of escape, and the stairs were on fire Cry Cry

Several locals described the block as a “death trap” and said the complicated layout of the flats made evacuation difficult.

The flats should have Fire Sprinklers, I have sed to the William Sutton Homes that we need Fire Sprinklers on the Estate, in the meetting the Fire Officer sed yes we do need Fire Sprinklers but it is not illegal for William Sutton Homes not to have them, it should be illegal not to have Fire Sprinklers in flats.
[Edit]
If they spent the money on Fire Sprinklers ensted of the cameras in flats lives would be saved.
By the way awre bin room has been on Fire 3 times, on the Estate total number of time the bin rooms have been on Fire is 16 times.  Plus 5 flats have been on Fire in the Estate, one made the news.  The bin rooms are in the flats on the Ground Floor of the bloks, this blok has 6 Floors in clouding Ground Floor, it is the biggest blok on the Estate with 37 flats in it.

Even spending money on facilities, services, activities and education  for youths, so they have something more positive to do in their communities rather than feeling marginalised and frustrated within their communities which usually leads them down the 1 path - crime.

Er! CCTV doesn't cut crime, it simply records it for later scrutiny.
Experience; is something you gain, just after you needed it most.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you. But because in that brief moment while the coin is in the air. You suddenly know what you are hoping for.

Re: Tenants fuming as flats turned into 'Big Brother house'

Just over a month ago, someone was stabbed to death in our town (the town is a former coal mining town and long since neglected so there is a load of social issues), the fight lasted around ten minutes before this young person lost their life. The incident took place just 20 metres from a CCTV camera and guess what, it never caught a thing, however that night it did catch 3 cars that were being driven illegally (no insurance or mot) which gave each driver a fixed penalty notice, so that is CCTV in action, real crime is ignored, petty crimes that generate cash are pursued

It would be interesting to see if there is a link between CCTV and the sale of hoodies, well I'm of to do a quick google search Smiley
