Telephone exchange

A friend of mine wants to goto his local telephone exchange to sort out a problem that BT refuse to deal with, and also to see when he can get fibre as open reach and DSL checker don't show any info.
Is it possible to go up to the exchange and speak to someone who works inside?

Re: Telephone exchange

Ours usually has several BT vans parked outside but I'd bet they'd soon ask you to leave if you knocked on their door.

Re: Telephone exchange

As mentioned in another thread I called into my telephone exchange last week.  They were very helpful and I got my problem sorted out Smiley

Re: Telephone exchange

But if there was engineers in, would they talk?
Or send me away?

Re: Telephone exchange

Given artmo's reply it might not be as bad as I'd assumed.
Probably depends entirely on the engineers / staff present.

Re: Telephone exchange

It obviously depends on the engineer but also on what you are wanting to talk to them about.

Re: Telephone exchange

I have a couple of old phones.
I could do with changing them for newer models.
I wonder if there's a telephone exchange near me?

A while ago I went up to an openreach van parked outside our local exchange asking about fibre, mentioned I'd never seen inside an exchange, was given the "guided tour", took about an hour.
Think it depends on how you approach the engineers.

Re: Telephone exchange

An hour, why so long. In the days of strowger I could understand as you could see and hear every number dialled and follow the progress of the call through the exchange and how equipment availability was controlled. Nowadays you can only see cabinets which probably only take up 20/30% of floor space compared to strowger, which is good as it allow space to put in adsl and llu equipment.

It would depend on the size of the brown envelope I would suspect.
