Telephone Age

I was thinking, yesterday evening, that I was a few days off my 34th birthday before we had a phone in the house.
Prior to that we got urgent news by telegram and walked to call box to make calls.

Re: Telephone Age

I was thinking how these days a mobile phone seems to be an essential personal item and remaining contactable 24 hours a day is a prerequisite of modern life.

Re: Telephone Age

When I was in hospital, last year, a student nurse was looking at her mobile to put times on my charts.

Re: Telephone Age

Same here, my parents never had a phone until well after I'd left home in my early twenties. We didn't have a television until I was about 13 years old. We got an indoor lavatory about then too. Also, I didn't live in a house with central heating until I was 30.
Now, of course, deprivation would be not having a Sky TV subscription and at least a couple of mobile phones.

I'm with artmo on this one.....plus I just couldn't bring myself to give Murdoch any money; even if it does mean me missing out on watching us win the Ashes

Re: Telephone Age

I'm not interested in sport, so for me Sky is an expensive way of just watching a load of TV repeats, which still have adverts in them despite the fact you're paying. Suffice it to say that it doesn't appeal to me either!

Re: Telephone Age

When I'm out shoppng, I dislike being stopped by people trying to flog me stuff I don't need, or trying to get me involved in a survey. I usually fend them off with a steely glare. But it's always fun to let the blokes from Sky have a go, just to see their bemused reactions when I tell them I don't have a TV.

That's funny, do you let them do the full pitch or are you kind and let them off early?
