Tax Rebate Phishing Scam

Heard something on the news, also received this -
Quote
This is a Police HQ message to all Ringmaster registered email recipients in Avon and Somerset
This is a warning of a high number of fraud attempts (phishing) supposedly from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).
The offer seems to be informing people that they are due a tax rebate. We have been asked to let you know that HMRC would not inform customers of a tax rebate via email, or invite them to complete an online form to receive a rebate of tax.
Do not visit the website contained within any email or disclose any personal or payment information.
We have been informed that the following email addresses used for this phishing include:
.        notify2@hrms.co.uk
.        refundtax@hmrc.gov.co.uk
.        TaxRefund@hmrc.gov.uk
.        service@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk
.        claims@hmrc.direct.gov.uk
.        notice@hmrc.gov.uk
.        hmrc@hmrc.gov.uk
.        admin@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk
.        info@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk
.        no-reply@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk
HMRC does not send out emails using these email addresses.
The correct website to contact HMRC is shown below:
www.hmrc.gov.uk
Please pass this information to other email users.
Thank you.

Re: Tax Rebate Phishing Scam

We have received an email at work about child tax credit, and I'm aware that some people have had a pay out (naturally I wasn't entitled to it) In this case there was a number for the tax office to call to see if the allowance had already bee factored into your 2003 (I think) allowance.

Re: Tax Rebate Phishing Scam

I received only a few days ago, what can only be described as a very authentic looking text purporting to be from HMRC telling me I was due a tax refund of several hundred pounds.

Suspicions were raised immediately since it was a text.

I sent off the included link address (which didn't hyperlink) to HMRC security, and received the following morning information that it is indeed a scam.

I wish HMRC was as quick off the mark with other tax enquiries.

Experience; is something you gain, just after you needed it most.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you. But because in that brief moment while the coin is in the air. You suddenly know what you are hoping for.
