Swine Flu .... worldwide panic???

OK... not really up to date on the worldwide death toll....
last I heard, it was around 600 mark, since this flu outbreak started in Mexico, a couple of weeks ago.....
now... the W.H.O., and international specialists are forecasting a "pandemic"... and causing a lot of people to worry about travelling anywhere....
to put it into some sort of perspective.....
I wonder how many pedestrians have been killed in traffic accidents .... world wide... during the same period.....?
are the W.H.O. issuing a "pandemic" notice?    are the governments issuing yellow hi visibility jackets to their people?
Makes you think.......................... Undecided Undecided Undecided

Re: Swine Flu .... worldwide panic???

From our local paper in date order
http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/search/4321477.DORSET_ACTION_PLAN_OVER_KILLER_FLU/
Quote
A TASK force has been convened to plan the county’s response to a flu pandemic which it is feared could kill 9,000 people in Dorset.
and from further down the same article
Quote
In the worse case scenario, based on up to half the Dorset population catching the virus, there would be major disruption around the county.
Such a pandemic could see as many as 350,000 struck down, with 13,000 falling seriously ill and as many as 9,000 people losing their lives.

PEOPLE in Dorset and the New Forest are being urged not to panic after it emerged that seven people in a neighbouring county have been tested for swine flu.

It is difficult to find the facts amid the media frenzy; as of today total cases in the world - 1025. Deaths - 26.

Re: Swine Flu .... worldwide panic???

According to the radio today - there have been about 1000 (that's one thousand) victims worldwide with a couple of dozen fatalities (sad I know, but more people than that die of malaria in Africa every day - and that's already easily curable)
And most of the people I've heard about in this country have been described as having mild symptoms - so why the panic all of a sudden!

first plant  the notion of a pandemic, then keep fostering the notion of huge numbers and you will soon have the whole world's population twitching to get the vaccine injection, which could be the primary means of transmission.

Re: Swine Flu .... worldwide panic???

Well yes, while we're all supposedly panicking about Swine flu, we're not taking too much notice about what else is going on in the world -namely the financial crisis- call me a cynic if you like, but I think its very "fortuitous" that this hyped pandemic followed hot on the heels of the G20. Anybody who has flown long distances will know how easy it is to pick up some disease or other in the dry rarefied air in an aircraft, every time I make the trip to New Zealand and back I almost invariably end up with a sore throat and flu like symptoms each way. but the world doesn't stop and catch its breath and start stock piling anti-this and that because of it.
I'd be a lot happier if our authorities took more notice of the thousands the annual flu outbreak here kills every year. I'm not over surprised that this outbreak seems to effect Mexico badly, outside of Mexico City the standards of health care are no better than in many third world countries.
Experience; is something you gain, just after you needed it most.

When faced with two choices, simply toss a coin. It works not because it settles the question for you. But because in that brief moment while the coin is in the air. You suddenly know what you are hoping for.

Seriously - just got an email from the reputable http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org  to say your computer can now also help find a cure to future influenza outbreaks - amongst other things. Join up. Give it a try. Whats the worst that can happen?  Roll eyes

Personally I'd go for http://www.malariacontrol.net/ - kills far more people.
(assuming these grid projects actually achieve their aims).

Since it kills more, maybe it's good the recent news item there reports they have no work to issue anyway. Wink
It would be nice if cures were attributable to these efforts - but as big as they are - its a small part of a bigger effort.
