Swedish doors

Has anybody watched Wallendar? All the external doors in Sweden seem to open outwards.
Any of you well travelled / knowledgeable people know why?

Re: Swedish doors

So that the snow doesn't fall in when you open the door?

Re: Swedish doors

In most European areas were it's cold the door  has a large overlap of the door to the door frame to stop draughts and the snow and rain getting in when bad storms. So may be that it work better with the overlap on the outside to the inside. The internal doors may also have a smaller overlap.

Re: Swedish doors

My outer door opens outwards as a matter of fact,it gives more room inside, doors on public biuldings in this country have to open outwards as a health and safety thing as I think James said. This was introduced some years ago after a tragic accident in Barnsley where a lot of children were killed in a crush at a cinima due to the doors opening inwards.

Re: Swedish doors

Yes unfortunately if a lot of pressure is put on a door it can stop the latch from coming out of the keep.
But my question about James' link is how can an interior door open outwards. Any which way could be outwards. My downstairs has 5 exits from the house (not including windows  Tongue) so any door leading to that door could be considered opening outwards one way but inwards if you use a different exit. There is in fact no industry standard to define which way is inwards and is based upon which side the hinges are compared to which way the door opens.

Many motel doors in the US open outwards and some don't have screen doors. This can sometimes be dangerous as people leaving a room can easily open a door as someone is walking past.

Re: Swedish doors

Personally I'd prefer Star Trek style sliding doors to become the norm as then it wouldn't matter what side of the door you were on.  Smiley

Re: Swedish doors

Not my fault, as you see I'm trying to steer back on topic but as its general chat I don't think normal rules apply do they?
