Surround sound muffled

Hi all
It's not been used for months but this evening I thought I'd turn on the surround sound. Nothing comes out the small speakers and the bass / sub is muffled.
This unit previously had a very loud humming I fixed by replacing an electrolytic cap so I don't think thats the issue again but I could be wrong.
I've checked all the wires, checked the output from the TV headphone socket with another amp / speaker (crystal clear) so it must be the main surround sound amp thing.
Any ideas before I dismantle it? - I've had this a few times with another old amp and it would suddenly come through nice and clear as if it was taking a while to warm up  Roll eyes

Re: Surround sound muffled

I suspect Transistor or IC with surround sound Wink
Double check the volume controls haven't oxidised - give them a few full rotations. Also check the connectors are clean and not oxidised.

Re: Surround sound muffled

Check, ... earthing points. where screws earth pcb`s to chassis... ( remove and reseat )... also get a can of Switch cleaner, if the volume/tone pots sound scratchy, or breaks up... ( possible need replacement ). If  I.C.`s are in socketst... carefully remove them and re seat them.. check back of pcb`s for breaks in circuitry... need good size magnifying glass and good light source for this.

Re: Surround sound muffled

Does the surround system have a built in test tone you can try?

Re: Surround sound muffled

No it doesn't. It was originally a PC surround sound system made by IT works and quite basic. It was a freebie from freecycle as it had a loud hum so probably not worth much lol.
Anyway with the PC being moved and the cables being too many to care for I hooked it upto the TV - SS on the cheap lol.

Re: Surround sound muffled

I have no idea what it's called  Embarrassed, but the woofer for my sound bar came with a block of metal you have to wrap the power cable around to reduce interference - I wonder if you maybe need something like that (whatever it is)  Undecided
