Quote
A recent study by the regulator Ofcom revealed that fewer than 1% of UK homes have a super-fast broadband connection, considered to be at least 24Mbps.
However, the government does not define the minimum speed it hopes super-fast services will achieve.

I would consider super fast to be 100mb/s+

Re: Super fast Broadband

Interesting chart attached and a quote from here.
Quote
Latvia (24.29Mbps), the Republic of Moldova (21.37Mbps), Japan (20.29Mbps) and Sweden (19.78Mbps) were the other countries with the fastest speeds in the world.
The world average was 2.10Mbps.

Re: Super fast Broadband

Strat, I can see the figures you quote in the article you've linked to and also the comment that the UK is 33rd in the world on speed.  I can't seem to locate the full league table anywhere Undecided

Thanks Strat.
BT have stated they will match the government's budget on this project - another £830M.

Re: Super fast Broadband

I heard the news this morning and thought 'so what?'.  My broadband is perfectly adequate for my needs and don't know what I would do with it if it were any faster.
I can browse very comfortably, watch television/listen to radio with no stuttering and it doesn't drop out so no problems really.
However, I do feel sorry for those who can't get broadband or the ones who have poor speed - maybe they should deal with these areas first.

Re: Super fast Broadband

The Latvian figure quoted was for Riga. It is not clear if that is a typical speed or an "up to" speed. Latvia as a whole may have a different figure. Similarly I wonder what a typical speed is in South  Korea outside the big cities.
"Up to" 50Mbps is already available in the UK via cable.

@artmo, Think he said 'best' not fastest,
I heard from a collegue that parts of Northern Sweden are experimenting with 1TB broadband as a test.
Iceland virtually has a nationwide average of 10MB
(we were staying on a farm 50 kms from the village/exchange still managed 10MB on speed test).
UK has a long way to go to catch up.

Re: Super fast Broadband

Gotta be said, I'm with poppy on it all tbh. While it might not be the fastest the world has, we're getting decent speeds - enough to watch youtube and iplayer (most of the time) etc. Admittedly webpages could be a bit quicker but they're far more complex than they were years ago with a lot more content so its not surprising they've slowed a bit.
My mobile BB dongle is cool. Average connection is 3Mb. Not the fastest but its still a lot superior to dialup isn't it.

Re: Super fast Broadband

I could certainly use faster broadband, I’m on 2MB at present, some of the work I do involves analysis of Aerial Photographs (specialist “feature analysis” software that as an example ‘counts the number of cars and trucks on a length of motorway’), hence I’m having to download large files.
My bottleneck is the bandwidth, with faster broadband I could take on more work.
