Super Typhoon Usagi headed towards Hong Kong

Super typhoon Usagi eyes Hong Kong with winds of 163mph as China braces itself for 'the most powerful storm yet this year'

We're used to Typhoons etc in Hong Kong, but this one looks like a big one, if it lands here.
Fingers crossed it will pass by...

Gusts exceeded 163mph today as it swept through the Luzon Strait

Hong Kong Observatory warns of 'severe threat' to densely peopled city

The Hong Kong Observatory said today that Usagi was 406 miles east-southeast of the city.
It predicted that the storm's maximum sustained winds would weaken to 103mph by 2pm on Sunday as it approaches Hong Kong before making landfall overnight.
The observatory was maintaining a No. 1 Standby Signal and warned that the storm poses a 'severe threat' to the densely populated city, where windows were taped up in anticipation of the chaos.
Cathay Pacific Airways and Dragonair said flights today were unaffected except for one cancelled flight.
But both airlines warned of delays and cancellations at Hong Kong International Airport from tomorrow evening to Monday morning, and urged passengers to postpone non-essential travel on those two days.

Re: Super Typhoon Usagi headed towards Hong Kong

I knew the situation at KaiTak in the late 40s when a similar storm threatened, had to help tying down aircraft on the airfield just in case, all very eery after the storm signals got more serious, but at the time very little wind about. Luckily the centre swerved elsewhere and a communal sigh of relief was heard. I wonder how well the architects sums were done on the high risers to counteract the stresses. When was there the HK Shanghai Bank was the highest, now it is a pigmy!!

Re: Super Typhoon Usagi headed towards Hong Kong

Typhoon Usagi did not hit Hong Kong full on, just lots of heavy rain and some strong winds.
Usagi made landfall in Shanwei city in China’s southern province of Guangdong, about 80 kilometres North of HK.

We were lucky this time, at least there was ample warning to prepare.
No-one in my family was really affected, and no injuries or lives lost amongst friends & staff.
Everyone just heeded the official advice, and stayed indoors.
A few short term local power cuts, nothing major.

The main affected area seemed to be Hong Kong Airport.
Hong Kong Airport Authority says a total of 177 arriving and 193 departing flights were cancelled on Saturday, while another 54 arrivals and 22 departures were delayed.

Photo shows Victoria Harbour as the storm approached, I've increased exposure to make the image lighter, it was actually much darker, as you would expect, in the evening.
