Suggestions for a decent Western movie

Hi y'all,

It seem ages since a good gritty Western/Cowboy film was released - the last good one on my list was "Unforgiven" with Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman.  The films on Netflix all seem to be of the same kind - gunslinger hangs up his guns and them comes out of retirement for revenge -  and badly acted.

Has anyone come across what they would deem to be a 'good' Western, whatever they interpret as 'good', in case I may have missed something?

Cheers

Mike

"Western" films are my favourite genre. Are you asking about recent releases, or older ones which you may have missed?

The older I get, the earlier it gets late.

Re: Suggestions for a decent Western movie

Hi again,

Sorry I should have been more specific: I was thinking more about recent releases but other suggestions are welcome.  High Noon is defiantly a classic and in my top ten along with the 'Searchers' and 'Unforgiven'.

It is also one of my favourite genres and interest - I was due to go on one of my annual trips to the US before this Covid-19 episode blew up, part of which included a trip to Tombstone, which I just love going to and soaking up the atmosphere.  You can be sitting there having a coffee and doughnut and a 'gunfight' starts up outside in the street.  Obviously all for the tourists, but great fun and interest.  I have re planned my trip to October/November when hopefully this madness will have gotten under control.

Any more suggestions?

Regards

Mike

Re: Suggestions for a decent Western movie

I'm not really au fait with recent releases.

You'll no doubt be aware of the more famous ones, so here are a few of the lesser known I've seen and enjoyed.

Once Upon a Time in the West  1968

Little Big Man  1970

The Outlaw Josey Wales  1976

The Hateful Eight  2015

Valdez is Coming  1971

Two Mules for Sister Sara  1970

Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid  1973

Tombstone  1993

Bad day at Black Rock  1955

Westworld  1973

Wyatt Earp  1994

Stretching the genre a bit - with trucks instead of horses

Duel  1971

The older I get, the earlier it gets late.

Re: Suggestions for a decent Western movie

Hi again 192KHz

thanks for the reminders.  I had forgotten 'Bad Day at Black Rock' and 'Little Big Man.  'Valdez is Coming' is probably Burt Lancaster's best ever role. Likewise Slim Pickens in Pat Garret.  I'll scout around to see if I can find them on Amazon or Netflix.

Cheers

Mike

"Shane" and a great theme tune too.

A bit off topic but the song "El Paso" by Marty Robbins is a classic case of words as visible as pictures.

The `original` True Grit` with John Wayne and a very young Glen Campbell. Never tire of watching this movie and the storyline is moving as well as having real outlaws who would scare the hell out of todays so called gangsters! 🤠

What about the Dollars Trilogy:

A Fistful of Dollars
For a few Dollars more
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

They were seminal works for the Spaghetti Western Genre but as films well worth a watch.

Three of the best there @Mook .

Such brilliant scores too.

John Williams, Leonard Bernstein, John Barry and others have written great western film music, but Ennio Morricone tops them all IMHO.

The older I get, the earlier it gets late.
