Strange phonecall

There doesn't seem to be much activity in the Phone forum so I thought I'd try here.

I just got a call with an American-sounding voice saying, "This is the Paytel automated phone service, please enter your Paytel phone confirmation PIN number."  I immediately hung up, and when the phone rang again straight away, I didn't answer.  1471 says, "We do not have the caller's number to return the call."

Google suggests it's a service used by prisoners in the US.

Has anyone else had this call, or does anyone have any idea what it is?

Re: Strange phonecall

Sounds more like a technical glitch rather than spam, or maybe some inmate just misdialed?

Never can be sure these days.

Re: Strange phonecall

Our landline phone rang a couple of days ago, but the ring tone was unusual... it rang three times, pause three times pause three times, instead of the usual two pause two pause two pause..  I took the phone out to the garden for the missus to answer, but it had rung off before she could speak..

 no calls since.

How many more of us pass the phone over to the wife (or partner)  to answer ?

I always pass to the Mrs as with three daughters, it's usually gossip for her anyway. Smiley

I pass it on to her, because I am almost deaf,... so it`s a waste of time me answering it ...

Re: Strange phonecall

@Minivanman  nope !... I do have a clip on telephone amplifier for the earpiece, but it is still very difficult for me to hear/understand what other people are trying to say to me.... even during "personal" contact one to one I have to have the missus as a translator sometimes... sitting around a small table, four people in conversation, but me,... in a state of "haven`t a clue what anyone is saying"..    it`s just so much jumbled noise..

Re: Strange phonecall

I often have my hearing aid in which makes answering the phone difficult. Weird eh?

@shutter and @Minivanman

Have either of you heard (no pun intended) about induction loop telephones?  The telephone handset is fitted with an induction loop which couples directly with the hearing aid through electromagnetic induction in a similar fashion as cinemas, public buildings etc. can if so equipped.

Re: Strange phonecall

Kinda... !... seen the T symbol in some shops... never bothered with it... as for a phone with that capability... well, I only use the phone about 5 times a year... MAXIMUM... so hardly worth the effort... especially as I have the missus to translate for me  ! ! !

Thanks for the response though.
