Steam Trains - A question.

I’ve just watched ‘Full Steam Ahead’ on BBC and I was wondering why stream trains puff smoke out of their chimney in such a distinct manner, as in choo, choo, it’s like there is a piston somewhere whose action pushes the smoke out, does anyone know why this is?

As I understand it in a way there is.

Steam enters the cylinders moving the pistons which drive the wheels.

The steam is then forced out of the cylinders by the return stroke and vented out of the chimney through jets taking the smoke with it.

This causes air to be drawn into the firebox increasing the temperature of the fire and the production of steam.

Each exhaust stroke of a piston causes a 'choo' at the chimney.

Ah it's not just smoke, well what you have just said makes perfect sense and also explains why the choo choo changes with the pace of the engine. Thanks for that @Strat.

Re: Steam Trains - A question.

Boilers for static turbines and reciprocating engines work on constant steady flow with different boiler sections such as superheaters, evaporators and economisers each designed to match the required flow. Different technology altogether

Re: Steam Trains - A question.

Interestingly I just saw a steam train a few minutes ago.
Chugging through Galashiels, on the Waverly line. Full complement of carriages as well.
Missed the actual engine, (just saw the smoke and heard the whistle) so don't know which one it was, but we have had Pride of South Africa, and The Flying Scotsman over the past 11 months (since it opened).

Very much like these originally, although later they went over to diesel engines.
