Stamps.

Like many on this forum i've just got the vulcan newsletter.
In it they're asking for stamps to be collected / donated.
Now I know stamp collecting has always been popular but why? Once it has been used it's worthless - royal mail aren't going to let you use it again are they! Plus there are so many 1st and 2nd class stamps floating around out there I really don't see how they could be considered rare enough to be worth anything to collectors.
So what on earth is so valuable about them?

Re: Stamps.

Unlike some coins on another thread..............
You can get some nice looking commemorative stamps that can be collected or even used. Wink

Re: Stamps.

Stamp collecting is a very common hobby and, with a constant supply of new entrants, there is a constant demand for more stamps. Everyone has to start somewhere and so even the run-of-the-mill stamps are of interest (and therefore have value) but there are also many special editions, misprints etc which are worth even more.  This is why stamps are collected, and then sold, in bulk by the kg as a commodity known as 'kiloware'.

Re: Stamps.

So basically people buy / sell buy the KG of stamps in the hope that they get lucky with a few valuable ones?

It's like people trading on the markets, investing in lots of things in the hopes of finding that one big payoff, people see value in many places, no matter how illogical it seems to others...

Re: Stamps.

But when it comes to the really pricy rare stamps isn't it now a chancy investment?
As it's now very hard to tell whether or not that vintage perforated gem in reality rolled of the presses just a few days ago.

Re: Stamps.

I don't collect stamps myself so don't know what the main draws and drivers are, however I imagine that it is not all about obtaining rare specimens but also building up variety.
Also, given the purpose and use of a stamp perhaps there is just as much appeal in a used stamp as a new one, if not more.

Re: Stamps.

I used to collect stamps for many years but, somehow, in one of my many moves they have been misplaced/lost. I had a lot of first editions most of them given to me plus many stamps from all over the world. I agree with MJN in that, for me, it was about building up a variety and also being in awe of many other countries' stamps which made ours look ever so boring Huh Not just the pictures but also the various shapes.
