Re: Some pile up...

They all drive too fast - but oddly they actually obey the speed limits on the sections of the autobahn where they have them

Re: Some pile up...

I thought there was a speed limit on all autobahns if it was raining?

Re: Some pile up...

I didn't think there was - you were just supposed to drive at speeds suitable for the conditions. A bit like the 130kph recommended speed which nobody seems to take any notice off

Re: Some pile up...

my main driving on German Autobahn is in the South, the only one I saw with a speed limit was the Munchen to Flughaven road which had signed variable speed signs on overhead gantries, Wiki bears out Santiago speed limits, recommended is 130 Km/hr

Re: Some pile up...

I've only been on an autobahn the once - and was amazed at the speed of the traffic !.
But at least it was dry.
Went into east Germany only a year after the Berlin Wall came down - and drove through to Poland.

Re: Some pile up...

Oh and by the way the German police won't have had that road closed for days.
They will have looked after the injured people, then dragged the wrecks out of the way and a quick brush up and off we go.

Re: Some pile up...

In Kuwait the coast road was regularly strewn with 'dead' sports cars on a morning.
It was not uncommon for the authorities to simply bulldoze the wreckage out of the way and leave it there.
Although all the wrecks of sports cars that I saw appeared to be empty, my father assured me that he had seen cars that had been bulldozed out of the way with their occupants corpses still inside on occasion.
I think you'd struggle to get faster than that for clearing roads, although its not the most 'sensitive' of treatments.

Re: Some pile up...

Wow!!!  That's some pile-up. Can you imagine that on the M25 - London would be paralyzed.
When I'm in Spain I'm alarmed at the speed they drive at there.  They have only just started using speed cameras in a big way so this might slow them down a bit.
In the USA I generally find drivers stick to the speed limits.

If you're referring to my comment on US drivers you're wrong.  They tend to drive up to the limit but not above it.  Top speed in US is 70 mph and you find them driving at 68 in this limit.
