Some good news for the older men among us

This means we will soon be able to have regular checks just like women do for their cancer types http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/UK-News/Scientists-Unveil-First-Reliable-Test-For-Diagnosing-Prosta...
Quote
Scientists have unveiled the first reliable test for diagnosing early prostate cancer.
The urine test is so accurate that it could be used to screen all older men for the disease.
Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer, killing more than 10,000 men in the UK every year.
Scientists at the University of Surrey identified a protein called EN-2, which is only produced by prostate cancer cells.
Studies show a test for the protein detects 60 to 70% of cancers.
But the false positive rate - men who are wrongly diagnosed with cancer - is just 4%.

Re: Some good news for the older men among us

Agree that is good news as it seems to be a simple test and prostate cancer is the most common male cancer.
There already is the PSA test which is a blood test.
Not having a prostate this isn't an area of personal concern but I'm all for anything that detects cancer early and increases survival rates.

A timely post Jim.  I'm off into hospital for a few days tomorrow to have treatment on my prostate.

Re: Some good news for the older men among us

Timely indeed!  I saw a vets programme where they used a scan to diagnose prostate cancer in an Alsation  and successfully treat it. Told my specialist about it and he said  (a)  the vets are way ahead of us  and (b) the PSA test  is all we have in our armoury and that is not reliable. So far Warfarin has kept mine at bay, long may it continue. There is a drug used within the NHS for other complaints which could be much better (no periodic blood tests) but it is apparently years before it gets it! Then, I suppose, it will be too expensive.

Re: Some good news for the older men among us

I wouldn't hold your breath! Having just had a series of investigations for prostate cancer and having asked about meaningful tests, my Consultant told me that it's likely to be around ten years before anything like the new test is freely available, mainly because it has to go through a lot of testing to ensure that it really does what it says on the tin.
The PSA test isn't worth the paper it's written on because there is no minimum level below which it can be said that there is no risk of cancer.

The scientists hope the EN-2 test could be in widespread use in 12 to 18 months' time.

Re: Some good news for the older men among us

In the US there is a test cPSA which is regarded as better than the standard PSA.  The surgeon who will be operating on me tomorrow did a trial of this on behalf of the RCS to see if it should be used here.  If I get a chance I'll ask him about it.

Sooner they sort a more appropriate test out the better.
Having a biopsy done is not the most pleasant thing in the world and as a result of my PSA going up despite medication it looks like I will be undergoing this procedure for the third time in as many years.
I was a bit puzzled about the use of Warfarin in one post (used to thin the blood) and also used in rat poison.(Honest)
I'm on Doxazosin & Perindopril, which I thought was the standard treatment for an enlarged Prostrate.

No, the absolute value is meaningless, my father had acute prostate cancer a few years back. Because of that my GP was quite happy for me to have a PSA test every 2 years so the relative values can be monitored. The history/trend of the value is meaningful.
