Re: Solvable Puzzle?

Given that the addition of three odd numbers can never give an even number I don't see how unless you use 2 x15 and leave the third one blank (hence zero)

Re: Solvable Puzzle?

It makes no reference to not using operators or limits to the numbers in the squares so:
[1+9] + [1+9] + [1+9]

Re: Solvable Puzzle?

(11-1)+(13-3)+(15-5)=30
No, I'm not that smart, I just googled the answer... Grin

Re: Solvable Puzzle?

Glad to be proved correct in that it cannot be done as a - character wasn't included in the list of available characters. Smiley

Re: Solvable Puzzle?

Well, it never said you can't use subtraction, got to think outside of the box, or boxes in this case... Grin

Re: Solvable Puzzle?

No, it says 'Fill in the boxes using...', the only things (characters) available (and therefore allowed by reasonable presumption) for use are the odd numbers 1 to 15 (plus a couple of brackets and some commas for the pedantic), the commas do open up a possibility if you're happy to accept alternative forms of numerical notation (namely the use, in some countries, of commas to denote decimals) so a possible legitimate answer (using ONLY the characters provided) would be 7,5 + 7,5 + 15 = 30

Re: Solvable Puzzle?

Characters yes, nothing about mathematical symbols, which neither says you can or cannot use them, so, I assume can so that makes it solvable... Cool
When you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.

Mathematicians are nothing if not pedantic.  Lips are sealed
It says you can repeat the numbers, but not the brackets.

There are a few dozen answers if it wasn't limited to base 10

IMO '+' '-' etc. are characters (my PC/keyboard treats them exactly the same way as other characters).
If it never said you can't use subtraction then it also never said that you can't use anything else you wish and the whole 'puzzle' becomes meaningless.
