Smartphone Kill Switch

The kill switch is here: iOS 8 enables it by default

What about Find My iPhone or Google’s Android locator?
Built-in tracking services can help locate a phone and wipe its memory if the phone remains online, but all too often thieves switch off a stolen phone and reinstall the operating system.
That wipes all personal information on the phone and your link to it.

Now we just need a subscriber operated high voltage, low current shock app on the handsets to shock the baddies !
And a continuous loud tone from the Earpiece.

Re: Smartphone Kill Switch

wont make a lot of difference I feel, the seller wont care if its useless, just the buyer will, at which point probably too late.

Re: Smartphone Kill Switch

you can brick a phone remotely even if someome did a hard reset and wiped your personal info, you just the carriers co-operation to perform the imei lock, some of htem actually do it by default as soon as you report your device as lost or stolen Wink

Re: Smartphone Kill Switch

This won't stop the healthy trade in blocked phones.
Next to new blocked phones are still in demand.
It's not difficult to get a legitimate smashed up but working phone, and swap the circuit board into the blocked one.
Online sales of blocked apple phones are clearly being bought for spares.
Of course you have to remember that not all blocked phones are stolen.
I've bought many myself. From police auctions.

The kill switch can only be enabled by the subscriber. Mobile operators, Apple and law enforcement agencies don’t have access to the system, and locked phones can only be unlocked by the subscriber.

So if you are a bad guy with incriminating evidence on your iPhone and the bobbies are knocking down your door....

Re: Smartphone Kill Switch

A thief stole my daughter's mobile phone a few years ago. It saved me loads of money.
Now Zen, but a +Net residue.
