The Royal Mail is closing down its StampStamp Service at the end of the year. The idea of the service was, for an annual fee, you/a small business could print your own prepaid postage labels for letters and parcels using software on your PC connected to an on-line account. If you were sending lots of small parcels/international mail it was quite useful because you avoided standing in a post office queue and you knew the postage amount paid would be accurate. The trouble is that Royal Mail's heart was never into the scheme. Unlike pre-franked mail there was no discount on postage rates. You have to pay for the labels and buy a printer suitable for printing one label at a time. Not to mention a £50 a year subscription fee. However for larger parcels you still had to stand in a the queue in the post office to hand in the parcels even though you'd already pre-printed the correct postage.
