Smart phone Apps

Hi all
I don't have a smart phone (well actually I kinda do, it cost £15 from Tesco and is smart enough not to break when it gets thrown against a wall / across the car park!)  Cheesy
Anyway, what I'd like to know, is apple have there own store don't they? Does that mean that apps for the iphone will only run on the iphone? Are there any apps that can run on everything and if so what are they created in language wise? - Java?
Is there a website that has all the available apps on it or at least one where I can search through the most common apps? The reason I ask is that I have an idea or two for an app and before considering buying a smart phone to create / test the ideas with I'd like to see if the idea has already been thought of etc.
I need a new signature... i'm bored of the old one!

Re: Smat phone Apps

Yes iphone apps are only for iphones (maybe some work on any sufficient iOS device: ipads, ipod touch etc.) - and since Apple banned "non native" code, no Java.
An "app" that could run on anything would have to be a web "app" (i.e. website) that worked properly in every mobile web browser, programmed in HTML, Javascript etc.

Re: Smat phone Apps

The app store for the Opera web browser lists a few apps and you can change devices to see what's available for different platforms. http://apps.opera.com

Re: Smat phone Apps

iPhone apps are only for iPhone but most decent apps are also available for Android (or close equivalents are available for those that might be Apple specific).

Re: Smat phone Apps

At the last company I worked for, they had am app that was developed for our industry. It seemed to run on anything hence I was wondering where to start for the most 'cross platform' app.
If it were you, where would you start?

I'm more then prepared to bow to others' superior knowledge of iThingies  Cheesy
Last I knew the iPod was 'just a music player' (albeit with a bit of Apple's magic touch - and pricing).

Re: Smart phone Apps

I have a samsung galxy ace, its only got the basic apps on it that came with it, ive looked at these so called free apps and most are just advertising scams.
Also apps that say they can speed up your phone or recharge your phone ... lol The more apps u add to these phones the spam/junk you get on your display and the more apps means more usage of the phones cpu and memory.. so adding apps which say they speed up your phone are actully slowing it down

Re: Smart phone Apps

So these smartphones.. take the QR code I posted back to dvorak..
Can you guys read the qr code directly off a computer screen or do you need to print it out?
Reason I ask is that last night for my website I suddenly realised I could offer two methods of validation for my contact form instead of captcha.. email link or QR code..
As for the apps, they already exist (although the 2nd specialised one only touches on my idea)

Re: Smart phone Apps

Just scanned the QR with my relatively inexpensive Huawei G300 (Android) straight off the screen.
As ukste20 mentioned, there are loads of 'rubbish' apps around but I think there are also some pretty good ones (depending on what you actually want or need), an example is my Fritz!Fon app that connects to my VOIP/DECT enabled router and allows me to make Landline and VOIP calls from the mobile via the router whenever I'm within wi-fi range (and to answer incoming non-mobile calls).  Epson iPrint allows me to use my wi-fi printer scanner from the phone.  Angry Birds whilst not actually useful is pretty addictive!
