Sky release a cut down Roku box for £10

https://shop.nowtv.com/
It looks like it is a roku lt re-badged with new f/w.
For £10 it is a bit of a bargain. You don't even have to sub to sky to get it!

Re: Sky release a cut down Roku box for £10

But..... you DO need a SKY sub to Use it.
Initially at any rate.
Albeit, one of the options is a 30 day free trial, you can cancel before 30 days.
Then..... you do not need a subscription.

I ordered mine lunchtime today.
Good old RSS gave me a heads up, though it's been mentioned on SKY Forums before.

Without subs, I will be able to receive BBC iPlayer, 5OD, BBC News, SKY News.
Which is all I am really interested in for my upstairs viewing.
Movies & Sports have two expensive options for subs.
There is another less expensive option, not widely publicised yet (NDA)

TBH, there are several very informative threads elsewhere, Digital Spy for one, SKY Community for another.

- Hardware is a rebadged Roku LT (Sky is an investor in Roku) designed to give access to Sky Movies and SKy Sports for those without a Sky dish (by using your broadband). It streams via wireless at upto 720p only.
- The box will give access to a modified Roku app store with competitor products removed so no Lovefilm, Netflix or Plex at this time (and possibly never).
- To use the box you will need a Now TV account (which is free) and this will give access to non-subscription apps such as iPlayer & 5OD. The free services will work even if you dont have a subscription or if you subscription has lapsed.
- To view Sky Movies or Sky Sports you will need a Now TV subscription (not free!) however there is a 30 day free trial at present.
- There is no Sky Go compatibility at all.

Re: Sky release a cut down Roku box for £10

What I said. No SUB required. A FREE trial which can be cancelled in the 30 days.
I will NEVER pay subs to sky for tv again. I will take a FREE trail which I will cancel before I am charged.
I will also be looking at hacking the box to enable more stuff to run on it.

If you've got the "use" of a SkyGo account logon (works well on iPad and laptop) would it work on this too?  Wink

Re: Sky release a cut down Roku box for £10

Hope they've improved now TV, otherwise it ain't worth the tenner.
When I tried the 30 day trial on Roku the library was [Censored] (despite their boasts)
Was SD only too, and of such poor quality it was pretty much unwatchable...
There's no remote app either and the remote apps for Roku don't work with it, which you need if you don't wanna be driven nuts by text input with the supplied IR remote.
Frankly you're better off just paying the £40 for the Roku (which you get the 30 day nowtv trial on anyway) as its more useful than the nowtv box.

Must say I've been pleased with Roku LT that I bought late last year  Smiley
Use iPlayer quite a lot, to save recording BBC, and have subscribed to Netflix.
Lovefilm isn't available on Roku.

I had a free trial of LF on my TV, can't say I was impressed with it.
Not tried Netfix and doubt I will in the near future either.

Re: Sky release a cut down Roku box for £10

just  ordered one  also..  for the  free  stuff.
there are  2  good  video  Demos on you tube..
 just  1  thought,
on the  white  remoat, there is a  APPS  button..
do you recon its  limited.  to what they provide like sky news... bbc i player.. etc
or  do u  recon    open to most  things on ones  own pc...?
 just a  thought
ALSO  for  doom and  gloomers.. on the  video a  guy  watched  a  movie  "the  watch"
the picture  quality/sound  was  outstanding  be it  720p and  audio   also..
there  seems  to be a  choice  stereo/5.1  although i noticed no optical  socket on the now  tv  box.
for a  optical  lead  to the  home  cinema/amp.

Re: Sky release a cut down Roku box for £10

My PVR came with iPlayer as an extra freebie
Also has Netflix (requires subscription) and a few other options...
It may include Now Tv - but I thought that looked a bit rubbish.
Even has "selected" You Tube videos.
Most post-watershed iPlayer video requires me to click on "Over 16"  Cheesy

Inside The  Google Chromecast Dongle
Chromecast packs in an Azure Wave AW-NH387 802.11 b/g/n WLAN, Bluetooth, a Marvell DE3005-A1 SoC and a FM combo module IC.
As far as memory goes, there’s 4GB of flash storage, as well as a necessary-but-not-mind-boggling 512MB of RAM.

Re: Sky release a cut down Roku box for £10

Well it didn't take long for the first hack to appear.
To enable Plex.
Quote
For those asking about hacks, we now have an unconfirmed instructions on how to run Plex:
The Now TV box has been found to still provide access to the Roku development mode. This allows you to sideload one developer version app to your device. Not all apps are made available in this way but Plex is!
How to install Plex onto your Now TV box
1) Enable dev mode on your box by pressing:
HOME 3 times
UP 2 times
RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT
(if this doesn't work then make sure you are not leaving long pauses between button presses)
2) Enable developer mode on the screen that comes up.
3) Download Plex client for Roku from https://github.com/downloads/plexinc/roku-client-public/Plex.zip
4) Open web browser on your computer and open http:// (example. http://192.168.1.100)
5) Click browse and navigate to the Plex.zip you downloaded
6) Click the install button
7) Run plex
Instructions taken from Plex FAQ and Roku forums.

I will be doing this when mine arrives sometime this week  Cheesy
