Re: Sky buy golf rights

If sky want to buy up all the sports rights from the beeb... and that gives the beeb money to produce "real" and "proper" NEW programmes... then good - oh... there will be plenty of room in the scheduling without the double dose of sport on beeb one and two at the same time...  Angry

R&A chief..

We believe this is the best result for the Open and for golf. The way people consume live sport is changing significantly and this new agreement ensures fans have a range of options for enjoying the championship on television and through digital channels

unless you can't afford £50 a month or object to the monopoly it has..

Re: Sky buy golf rights

you always have the option of actually going to the event, thus your money goes direct to the R&A.
this means you don't need to pay for a subscription or go against any morals one would have with regards to monopolies.

@ Shutter.
Well said! Sport ought to be on sport channels. In Wales we often get normal BBC 1 & 2 service literally "kicked off" in favour of current National teams performances old and new quite regularly. A very sore topic!!

Re: Sky buy golf rights

I have little interest in tennis or football but I like watching snooker occasionally.
I would be very disappointed if it was made subscription only.
I'm well aware that living in Sheffield, the current home of snooker world championships, I can visit the game personally but getting a ticket for the final would be quite a challenge and not only financial.
I'm currently enjoying great success in resisting the temptation of Sky satellite services and long may it continue.

Re: Sky buy golf rights

problem with this list is... what if no FTA terrestrial channels want to show one of the items on the list?
ok, it's unlikely that this would ever happen at the moment, but it's possible in the future.
financial restraints or simply no appetite to show it could happen.

Re: Sky buy golf rights

there's a business argument here though. why should the government dictate who the R&A can sell their product to (and the R&A is a business at the end of the day).
why should government say you can only sell your product to the BBC (no other channel would ever be interested) and only get £3m (or whatever it was) per year for it, when they could sell their product to someone else and get more than double the amount per year?
we (the public) have no right to see anything for free. there was a time when people had to go to the venue to see an event... shock horror!

You`re dead right there.... the government even makes us pay to watch adverts on commercial television.... and those with sky... have to pay twice over..... once to sky... and again for the tv licence

The trouble is that there are too many of our politicians, old pals of Murdoch & co, who would like to do just that. Angry
