Silly Phrases

I thought I'd start another topic (just to lighten the mood Smiley).

I've heard this before, and just seen it on Facebook again.
"I've seen it with my own eyes"

Made me laugh.
Then I think, well how exactly do you see things through someone else's eyes Tongue

Any more people can think of?

"If you fall off that wall and break both your legs, don't come running to me"

A float tip is pleasing in its appearance and even more pleasing in its disappearance.

"Never seen it before in my life!"

Unless you believe in reincarnation then the last three words are pointless.

It comes from the traumatic childhood memory of being told to go to the bottom step. whennaughty.Funny

Re: Silly Phrases

Aren't a lot of silly phrases a means of emphasis, or expression of surprise?I think they are somewhat also to idiom, in that they do not translate between groups. Just like we say, "raining cats and dogs", whilst Germans call that "Hundewetter".

Re: Silly Phrases

I caught a bit of Countdown on C4 yesterday, and Susie Dent (lexicographer) was talking about malaphors (a blend of a malapropism and a metaphor).  Here's a selection: http://blog.oxforddictionaries.com/2017/05/malaphors/

Yep MS Office, when I try to copy and paste stuff into Excel. I can’t remember the exact phrase but something like “This operation cannot be completed”, with a link to say “Was this information helpful”.

Errm - let me think on that one.
