Sign of the times

My employer (funded by the tax payer, of which I am also one) has a notice fixed to paper hand towel dispensers:
"Why take two ... if one will do?"
Today, I found an added scrawl to the unit in my department:
"If its free ... take three!"

Re: Sign of the times

That's absolutely correct. If something is perceived to be free to the user it's often wasted.
I saw this in action with my electricity when my kids were at home.
I see it in Mc Donalds where people will take a handful of tissues and only use one, throwing the rest away.

Re: Sign of the times

There must be a knack  to using these paper towel dispensers... it's not uncommon to try and get one out and you end up with several.
Even worse are those toilet tissue dispensers but let's not go there...

You've got a good point there. I wonder how people's attitudes would change if they were charged 1p for anything that was previously free? 1p would be such a small amount that it wouldn't have any significant effect on people's finances, but I bet the psychological barrier would make a big difference in cases such as this.

Re: Sign of the times

I have two Tesco re-usable woven material bags which cost me about 50p each and look as though they will last for years.
Unless I forget to put them in the boot I don't use plastic bags any more.

Re: Sign of the times

On the subject of plastic grocery bags, I seem to recall that Tesco give you clubcard points for every bag (of any type) that you reuse instead of taking a new one – so that's a small incentive in itself to be more frugal with your plastic bag consumption.

Re: Sign of the times

Same at Sainsbury.  One point per bag if you don't use a new one.
