Should the price of Alcoholic drinks be increased

Can't make my mind up about this one but I would rather the price of essentials like food, heating, petrol be kept down and subsidised by increases in non essential things such as drink, entertainment etc

Re: Should the price of Alcoholic drinks be increased

I don't think it will make much difference if i'm honest. If people want it they'll pay for it just like with petrol. Sure they'll moan etc but the end point is they'll still struggle to find the cash and then buy it.

I agree with okrzynska.
I can't see that increasing the cost of non-essentials would help lower the cost of a loaf of bread and a pint of milk.
If it was a tax increase then the government would just keep it to pay for more wars and bail out the bankers.
The supermarkets would just up their profits.

Hasn't it been discussed here before? about supermarkets selling some Alcoholic drinks as "loss leaders".
Should they be allowed to?

Re: Should the price of Alcoholic drinks be increased

Last time i had an alchoholic drink was 23rd Dec 09 - i smashed up the car into the front end of a volvo and seeing as it took me months to find it i was gutted. Went to the offy and bought a bottle of vodka. I was good though.. only drank 1/4 of it. Not had a drop since then. I don't generally drink but that was a bad day for me in 09.

Re: Should the price of Alcoholic drinks be increased

OP seems to be advocating for food pricing to be set by the government... I'm not at all sure about that, I'm not totally against it either, but I think before we go down that road a lot a thought needs to be given to it.

Re: Should the price of Alcoholic drinks be increased

It seems that whatever price is set drinkers will still buy it.  If they can't afford it they'll steal it.
