Sheffield Cooling Towers - End of an Era

Found out today that Eon have set the date for the demolition of Tinsley Towers (24th August 200Cool, despite objections and petitions. I am mortified - anyone who travels oop t'north on 'M1 knows as soon as they see the towers that they are passing through Sheffield. How will anyone now be able to find Meadowhall, Sheffield Wednesday FC and last but not least, the world famous Plusnet Towers?
This is terrible news and I think that I might go into a decline or else go and stand in the middle of one in the hope that it will stop them doing the infamous deed.

Re: Tinsley (not PN) Towers to be blown up

I'll be glad to see them fall. I had my first sexual encounter within sight of these towers and every time I see them I think of her mother who was standing watching us. It sends a shiver down my spine. Sad

I normally find this is worded as "why would".

Re: Tinsley (not PN) Towers to be blown up

Preparation work for the dreaded deed is already under way.
It is a highly emotive subject in Sheffield with crowds on the streets daily, engaged in earnest discussion about the various merits or otherwise of these two monuments to an industrial heritage.
The local newspaper is distributing a full colour glossy magazine with every issue from now to the fateful day (or early morning) detailing the rise to fame of these structures.
Television and radio around the world is carrying up to the minute news about this event which threatens to eclipse the Olympics themselves.
I could go on but I hear a siren  in the background which is probably an ambulance coming to take me to a safer place for my own good.
They say there's a novel in everyone. Here is mine.

I'll shed a tear as I drive past tomorrow night. When I see them I know I'm in touching distance of the county I call home and have always had a fascination with them from being a child..

Re: Tinsley (not PN) Towers to be blown up

I have also always seen them as an icon, and they were planned to feature in a photographic collection of iconic landmarks which folks travelling around the North would be familiar with.
Sadly I've not had the time to make them part of my collection yet,.
The reality of the situation is clearly visible if you drive slowly enough past them - they are in a ruinous state, particularly the southernmost tower - suffering from extensive concrete fatigue and rapidly heading towards demolishing themselves.

Re: Tinsley (not PN) Towers to be blown up

Lets hope the power company has enough sense not to blow them up next month.  Newspaper headlines of "Twin towers destroyed" would be a bit of a PR gaffe with our american cousins during September. Roll eyes

No, it is not September - the evil deed will be done in the early hours (approximately 3 a.m.) on Sunday, 24th August 2008. The M1 will, of course, be closed. As I write, the towers are being swathed in wires and other paraphernalia so it looks as if there is no going back.
There will be nothing of note left to indicate to the traveller that they have reached/are driving through Sheffield.
A sad state of affairs.
