Sharapova v Azarenka was the noisiest match I’ve ever heard

Just read this and watched the video clip. I think Its wrong and something sinister Is going on.
Quote
Grunting or screaming in women's tennis is nothing new. Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka being two of the loudest in the game is nothing new either. But when the two of them came together in the women's semi-final at Roland-Garros, it was the noisiest encounter I had ever heard.
The screams just went on and on - not just at the point each hit their shot, but still when the ball was on the other side of the net, almost on the strings of their opponent's racquet.
It was Sharapova who most caught me by surprise. Although she is a screamer, she was Azarenka's equal - or perhaps even more prominent - in the way she hit the ball. Her squeal was much longer than it's ever been.
It became intolerable by the end

I wonder if the spectators ever join in?
If they did what could the umpire possibly say?

Do the tickets include ear defenders?

According to Martina Navratilova Its cheating, pure and simple. And I agree with her after watching this clip.

The sound made by the strings of a racquet striking the ball gives the skilled player an important clue about the speed and spin of the ball they are about to face. Drowning this sound out with a loud grunt denies that information to your adversary.

The sound of the ball on the strings is very noticeable and this is even greater in a contained area such as a stadium. Martina is spot on Smiley

So how does that work for fans who paid good money to go and watch the game? Are they handing out remote controls at the gates? Technology must of came on leaps and bounds Roll eyes

Put your fingers in your ears Grin Grin
I'm a regular visitor to the Championships at Wimbledon and never found grunting to be a problem.  In this case I think it was exacerbated as both players were involved.

OK, I see that, but don't see how grunting is cheating. You could say the same about every strike of the ball and demand the watching crowd are silent because they are denying the receiving player 'vital' information. I would say, however, that if the grunting is done specifically to obscure the sound, then it is bad sportsmanship.

And the way to stop it is for the crowd to join in and make fun of it.
