Shake it off

At around 03:00 the whole house (we're mid-terrace) started to vibrate for around 5 seconds. It wasn't a violent shaking but enough to be noticeable and worry SWMBO. No heavy vehicles passing or low-flying planes. Couldn't hear anything untoward outside; car  alarms, etc and I assume all the neighbours were asleep.
I'm wondering whether it was an earthquake here in Thanet. Had a look at British Geological Survey but the last update was under two hours ago.
Anyone else felt anything?

Yes it seems you had an earthquake. I guess the ground moved for you Mav Wink
This sort of thing is very common in California. On my last trip to LA we had one during breakfast and some people didn't even bother to run into the street, just carried on eating.

Re: Shake it off

why run in the street? Did you not read the hotel guidance on earthquakes?

Re: Shake it off

The advice was to go into the street and away from buildings. When we did go out that was where a lot of people were. They didn't stay long though. Earthquakes are so common within minutes people were getting on with their business again.

Re: Shake it off

Strange you must have been staying in an unsafe building as California guidance is to stay indoors

Yes I was having breakfast in a small cafe on Hollywood Blvd. I would agree with you that the buildings could be regarded as 'unsafe'. I was staying at the  Roosevelt but went out for breakfast. Smiley

Apparently the epicentre was about a mile away. My first earthquake experience which was a tad unnerving but at least there are no reports of anyone being hurt or major damage.

I'll be driving down with a van load of Thorntons toffee as aid from Derbyshire.
