The Engine That Powers the World: Timeshift
Looking at the surprising story of the diesel engine - a 19th century invention which is the hidden powerhouse behind the globalised world and is now indispensable.
Car enthusiast Mark Evans gets hands on with Mr Diesel's original creation, including vintage submarines, tractors, locomotive trains and container ships.

I downloaded this and watched it a couple of days ago.
Quite interesting.

British ministers tried to block EU moves to clean up air quality
About 29,000 deaths in the UK are hastened by inhalation of minute particles of oily, unburnt soot emitted by all petrol engines and an estimated 23,500 by the invisible but toxic gas nitrogen dioxide (NO2) discharged by diesel engines.

Re: Say No2 Diesel... ?

the government is correct in its assertions that the EU has no necessity to implement such a law that forces member states to police in particular fashion, a broader strokes approach would of been to increase the ncap standard and make that compulsory for new sales, and produce a directive to the effect environmental checks should be conducted regularly on batches of vehicles to ensure they met the standard, so far from watering down the requirements it wanted the new legislation worded differently so it was up to member states how to apply the new measures just as it has been in the past.
of course the guardian would be all over that with a bit of pro eu spin and totally ignored the vital aspect that the EU is now starting to harmonise laws across member states soon it will be telling everyone how to live and what language to speak.....the allies didn't spend all those lives and spill all that blood for freedom for a bunch of dictators in waiting to steal it away with a few strokes of a pen !

LPG also isn't allowed on the eurotunnel

I'm surprised at that.
If electric cars take off what will they do about potentially large lithium bombs?

Given that they've had two cargo files that have caused serious damage, it really shouldn't be a surprise at all - LPG is dangerous stuff and as pointed out by another member, rather volatile!
As for lithium.. yes potentially its dangerous but i'd still say it's safer than lpg!

LPG is dangerous stuff

Is it really?
When it first appeared it was pointed out that in some aspects it was much safer than petrol.
As in the event of any spills it quickly evaporates.

Re: Say No2 Diesel... ?

its dangerous if the storage vessel or associated lines aren't up to the job, but just like any compressed gas a few simple safety precautions and the proper equipment for storage handling and use make it no more dangerous than any other petrochemical product

Re: Say No2 Diesel... ?

The next stage of EU emissions standards will incorporate real-world driving.
The industry is seeking agreement from the European Commission for a new emissions test that embraces new testing technologies and which is more representative of on-road conditions.
Real-world exhaust emissions from modern diesel cars (2014)
http://www.theicct.org/real-world-exhaust-emissions-modern-diesel-cars
Quote
This study analyzed the on-road emissions performance of fifteen new diesel passenger cars, twelve certified to the Euro 6 standard and three to the US equivalent (Tier 2 Bin 5), using portable emissions measurement systems (PEMS), which provide a continuous stream of vehicle data signals including emission rates, velocity, acceleration, road gradient and exhaust temperature.
On average, real-world NOx emissions from the tested vehicles were about seven times higher than the limits set by the Euro 6 standard. If applied to the entire new vehicle fleet, this would correspond to an on-road level of about 560 mg/km of NOx (compared to the regulatory limit under Euro 6 of 80 mg/km).
This is compelling evidence of a real-world NOx compliance issue for recent-technology diesel passenger cars, for both the EU and US test vehicles.

It would be a shocker if they applied that to buses and trucks.

Re: Say No2 Diesel... ?

Electric cars powered by coal fired power station electricity account for:
600mg NOx/kilometre
240gm CO2/kilometre
assuming 100% efficiency in power transmission, battery charging, battery storage, and electric motor output.
The Euro 6 standard for petrol/diesel cars is:
180mg NOx/KM
95gm CO2/KM
Now Zen, but a +Net residue.

Re: Say No2 Diesel... ?

Recent tests have also shown that real "fuel" costs are more expensive per mile for the "clean" electric vehicle.
